‘I was mortified’. Survivors of abuse whose perpetrators may be eligible for early release are pleading with the government to make an urgent decision to stop the scheme altogether. Under the new Sentencing Act set to come into force in September, some 6,000 criminals were due to be released under the early prison release scheme. #gmb #prisons

Keeping the public safe will always be my top priority. I have instructed my team to put a pause on the sentencing changes that were due to start in September. No prisoners will be let out under this policy until we have conducted an urgent review and done everything we can to minimise risk to the public. Where changes are needed, I will not hesitate to make them.

EXC: In a rare coordinated response @VictimsComm @CommissionerDA have written to gov ministers warning that a failure to put safeguards in place for abuse victims will leave them at risk when new laws see early release of offenders from September theguardian.com/law/2026/jul/0…

A new Practice Direction on Listing in the Criminal Courts has been published - which will support criminal courts to prioritise cases and reduce backlogs. Find out more on our website: judiciary.uk/guidance-and-r…

The Early Victims' Right to Review will be rolled out nationwide. The rollout was only possible due to the work of campaigners such as @jadeblueLDN. This is a big step forward, giving victims of rape and serious sexual offences a second chance at justice.

As we mark #ASBAwarenessWeek, it feels fitting we publish Baroness Newlove's final report - on Victims' Day no less. Looking forward to this evening’s @ASBHelp parliamentary reception, held in tribute to her tireless work tackling anti-social behaviour ⬇️ victimscommissioner.org.uk/news/baroness-…
