Was excellent to visit Mexico City recently for multilateral consultations. New Zealand & Mexico have a long history of working together to support positive outcomes in the UN system. The panel discussion at the Instituto Matías Romero was a highlight.

Recognizing the central role of Member States in the reform process, today the General Assembly decided to establish an informal ad hoc working group to consider the SG’s report on the Mandate Implementation Review as part of the SG’s #UN80 Initiative. I have appointed Ambassador Carolyn Schwalger of New Zealand @CSchwalgerNZ and Ambassador Brian Wallace of Jamaica @BCMWallace_UN to co-chair the working group with the aim of concluding the work by March 2026. I urge all Member States to engage in the working group to ensure that meaningful reforms can be made and to support constructively the work of its co-chairs. The #UN must be led through the crisis and into the future by all of us by rebuilding trust in one another and in the institution that we established 80 years ago.

New Zealand is gravely concerned by the escalation in tensions between Israel and Iran. Any further retaliatory action significantly increases the risk of a regional war. This would have catastrophic consequences in the Middle East.
It is critical that all actors prioritise de-escalation. The best path to regional security is the ongoing talks between the United States and Iran.
We have asked officials to convey these messages urgently and directly to the Ambassadors of Israel and Iran in New Zealand.
We are very focused on the safety of New Zealand staff in Iran, and on New Zealanders in the wider region. MFAT is following the situation closely.

Indonesia is an absolute priority for the New Zealand government, which is why we have now visited here four times since re-taking office as New Zealand Foreign Minister in late 2023.
Indonesia is one of New Zealand’s oldest friends in Southeast Asia and our relationship is warm, deep, and broad-based. There is much that we admire about your country. We are ambitious for us to do much more together.
