Measuring growth in crypto is not the same as measuring growth in Web2, and Maggie Hsu at a16zcrypto makes this obvious. A wallet is not a user. One person may hold ten addresses, and one address may be a bot. Monthly active addresses mean little unless they are paired with new apps and genuine activity. TVL is noisy. But when combined with trading volume and fees, it reveals whether capital is sticky or mercenary. The cost of capital, relative to fees, must also be part of that equation. Infrastructure and SaaS look closer to traditional business. Revenue growth, GRR, and NRR remain the cleanest signals of stickiness and expansion. Games and wallets are hybrids. You measure daily active addresses, daily transacting users, ARPU, and token holder distribution. Whales versus retail tells you where power lies. CAC and LTV survive, but they are warped by token incentives. Incentives can bootstrap communities. They can also buy fake growth. The difference is existential. Awareness is not about mega influencers. It is about aligned voices and micro communities. Word of mouth spreads faster, and on chain it can be verified in real time. Conversion is messy. Funnels straddle off chain and on chain. Attribution is hard, but blockchain transparency offers signals Web2 could never produce. Retention is the ultimate truth. Airdrop farmers vanish. Real users return. Cohort analysis shows whether you built belonging or simply bribed activity. Churn is not always visible. Wallets fade into silence. Friction in UX and gas fees push them away. Share of wallet is measurable in real time. You can see where users drift, where they defect, and why competitors capture them. The lesson is simple. Crypto growth is not Web2 repackaged. It is a remix. On-chain data, human behavior, memes, sentiment, and power users matter as much as the numbers. Ignore this, and the metrics will lead you astray.

3) What went wrong? Although the issues were flagged, they were ultimately downgraded by BetterBank's team as “Low” or “Informational”. Had these findings been taken more seriously and investigated further, the exploit might have been mitigated.
