I love America, but I hate to burst your bubble: if you are on Twitter, and you are getting posts about how Europeans visiting for the World Cup are completely in awe of American food and grocery stores— I have to be honest with you and tell you you are being fed complete nonsense by the algorithm. I’ve traveled to almost every European country, and there isn’t a single one which doesn’t have better grocery stores and higher-quality restaurant food than the USA. Just being honest, as a doctor should

@MaryRuwart Solid advice for both parties to consider. They use to call this approach as “precedent” and the “gentlemen’s agreement” where neither party wanted to give the other an excuse to act in the same way.

@Molson_Hart The measurement of a country’s production is a measurement of its ability to generate wealth. Without healthy generation, services collapse. Europe is struggling with its social spending and benefits as revenues drop and more become reliant without contributing.

What happens when Americans realize that GDP is fake? That the US has the lowest life expectancy in the developed world? That driving everywhere is high stress and a miserable way to live? I get that this is an "opinion" article, but they edit those unless you're Barack Obama or something, and they're sponsoring it. They're just spreading ignorance. Europe is not poorer than the United States. It certainly has its problems, especially for those who are ambitious, but man...Europe is nice.

@omgsidewalks You might be confusing inflation for “capitalism.” We recently published a book to help explain where inflation and weakening of the dollar started. When the dollar was strong, you needed less money to purchase things and needing less gave more flexibility for families.

“Capitalism is anti-family.” Any economic system that requires both parents to work (and work more hours so that the owner class can increase profits, forcing them to spend less time with their children, cannot be pro-family.

@0xDavecryps The quote about skipping certain things is mistranslated: “live within your means.” You can either grow your income or cut your expenses. Neither of those are fixed in America. Freedom allows risk and personal responsibility to success.

The U.S. economy basically works like this: Get paid $5,200. Pay $2,200 in rent. $650 for groceries. $550 for your car payment, insurance, and gas. $450 for health insurance and medical bills. $350 for utilities and internet. Stretch whatever’s left until the next paycheck. Then get a lecture from someone who bought their house for $95,000 in the early ’90s about how skipping lattes and Netflix is the key to building wealth.

@beyond_capital Capitalism has the same thing: ten people create a company and invest time and effort to create a product. They own the company together and reap equal shares of the company. The people they pay to build the product after their risk, effort, ingenuity are invested benefit as well

@NKY_Leftist Many companies don’t produce a product (aka service based industries). SpaceX provides a service that only two other companies can compete against. Before the Government contract, the company was still growing and succeeding, having customers does not denote a negative.

@_Shanny_4 Mortgage is a loan. Once paid off, you will own the house. In communism, there is zero chance to own. Property is assigned by the government and taken if the government deems it necessary.

Capitalism is only a couple hundred years old. Humans have not been paying to live and survive on this planet for thousands of years. Please understand this

@omgsidewalks Prices are based on three base factors: 1) labor (wages), 2) supplies (parts), and function (cost of business). Prices can go up because the price of supplies to make it go up or because the taxes or licenses or permits to have the business go up.

Do any of these “we can't raise the minimum wage because then prices will rise” people have any explanation for why prices rise anyway, even if wages don't? and if we can't raise wages, what's their plan for workers to continue to be able to afford the increased price of things??

@MuthamiaRichard @omgsidewalks You need one more constant for that fact to be true, the game board size. If the game board increases, given time as the only constant, the system will not fall into one set of hands. The system may rotate majority ownership but will never reach monopoly.

Karl Marx was right when he said; capitalists are their own gravėdiggers; that they repress wages yet seek to maximize profits, eventually workers can’t buy whats produced and the system starts coming to a halt.

@DarrigoMelanie The US spent more than $476 billion on low income individuals and that did not end any of what you listed. Provide proof that an additional $165 billion would magically solve what 3x that could not.

Elon Musk's net worth increased by $165 billion today. That could end homelessness, hunger and provide tuition-free public college. Extreme wealth inequality is a product of a rigged system designed by the rich to benefit the mega-rich, at the expense of everyone else.

@ToriatheistTori Social Security was not funded off those taxes and was substantially different than today. The jobs and middle class have been credited to World War 2, not FDR. In fact, if WW2 had not occurred, his policies would have extended the Great Depression by almost another decade.

@Handre @CaliforniaGlobe The high schools jobs are disappearing. No more interviews or consideration for under 18; not worth the risk and headache. Where the previous generation graduated high school with 3-4 years of experience, now they graduate with a few months of experience.

McDonald's announced they're replacing cashiers with kiosks in California just after the $20 minimum wage kicked in. Shocking to absolutely no one who understands basic economics. When you artificially price labor above its market value, employers find substitutes. Machines, automation, or they simply eliminate positions entirely. The teenagers who desperately need that first job experience? Gone. The single mother trying to re-enter the workforce after years away? Priced out by someone with more skills. You've just created a legal barrier that prevents the least skilled workers from competing on the one thing they had going for them: willingness to work for less while they build experience. Politicians pat themselves on the back for "helping workers" while unemployment among young minorities hits double digits. The workers who keep their jobs benefit (temporarily), but the invisible victims, those who never get hired in the first place, don't make headlines. Economics doesn't care about your good intentions.

@HemishaV Or we go back to the way it was created: they only get compensated for travel and stay. No wage. No benefits. No pension. Just a compensation check for the cost of doing their job. When complete, they had to live by the same laws and expectations that they created while in office
