We said goodbye to my sweet father-in-law on Thursday. He was an extraordinary man who was loved and respected by all. Thank you papa for welcoming me into your family with such warmth and love! I will miss the stories of your youth, your incredible work ethic and honesty, and your sense of humour. We will miss you so much! GURCHARAN SINGH CHOPRA February 2, 1931 - November 28, 2024 We said goodbye to our sweet father today, and we write this in memory of an extraordinary man. Our father was from a genteel era, born in 1931 at No. 3 Clive Road just days before the inauguration of New Delhi as the new capital of colonial India. He spent his early years here, while our grandfather was the Accountant General during the building of a new city for the British Government. The youngest of 7 sisters and an older brother, each of them larger than life, he grew up with his nieces and nephews, whom he would describe as his best friends. The family later returned to Lahore, where he attended Chiefs College Lahore (Aitchison College), a high school for the ruling Chiefs of Punjab. Given the label Singh No. 3. at school, our proud grandfather was very unhappy with this, prompting a name change to Chopra! At age 16, the family packed up and fled in an army truck for a new India during the 1947 partition—the move and the split left an indelible mark on our father. He spent a few years in Cuttack with the family, before settling back in Delhi and then travelling to Banaras Hindu University and Birmingham University to study Electrical Engineering. The journey would continue after marrying our mother, whom he first met serendipitously at Mrs Singha’s school play in costume at age 6 in Lahore! They started their life together in Durgapur, Jamshedpur, Calcutta and then Bombay. He would describe these years as the best years of his life, filled with good friends and laughter, a club life over beers and a sophisticated India. Friends made over these years would remain some of their best friends. In 1976, at age 45, he embarked on a journey, once again, across continents to a new land of opportunity, America, at the height of the steel industry. Here we watched our father build a house and a home filled with love, an incredible amount of hard work and the bedrock of his past. He planted the pine trees and cherry blossoms in the garden on Arbor Day, and watched our roots take ground in a yellow, ranch-style house on Raccoon Trail overlooking the ski slopes that he was so proud to have built for us with $700 in his pocket. He would wake up at 4:00 am every morning, say his prayers with such vigor and then drive the two hours each way to New York, sometimes commuting by bus. Our weekends were filled with gardening, long drives across the Appalachian Mountains and gatherings with our new community of friends. After 7 sisters, a wife and 2 daughters, nothing made him prouder than his granddaughter Maya! Deeply analytical and of an era where everything was done with paper and pencil, he later worked on large-scale projects such as the World Trade Center and the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. We can’t remember him ever taking a vacation day, and at the age of 82, he finally agreed to retire! It was a grand life lived well, enjoying every moment and every meal, always with family and friends…either with our tight-knit community in Sussex County or with his sisters, nieces and nephews who would visit from India. The door to his home and his heart was always open, from No. 3 Clive Road to 2 Raccoon Trail. In recent years, our family had been brought together again in Delhi, back to his city of birth, where we were privileged to spend every day with him for the last 10 years, listening to his life stories (with an occasional conspiracy theory that made us all laugh). He was so proud of sending Maya off on her adventure to America. Nanaji, Guchie Mama..Pops was undoubtedly the teddy bear of our extended family and friends, loved by all who were lucky to have been a part of his life. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, the love of his life, 2 doting daughters, a son-in-law whom he adored and a granddaughter who was the apple of his eye. You were so deeply loved, Pops! How bravely you lived your life, and we promise to continue to live our lives in your name.

Tested positive the second time. Different but severe symptoms than the first. Unfortunately, this happens when I am still dealing with long Covid. Third-wave is spreading much rapidly in India. Please take care.
