The “Typing…” indicator in WhatsApp is not caused by constant refreshing or polling every second. What’s happening behind the scenes is real-time event signaling. When a user starts typing, the app sends a small “typing started” event to WhatsApp’s servers. That event is immediately pushed to the recipient’s device over a persistent connection (typically WebSockets or a similar real-time messaging protocol). When the user stops typing, another event (“typing stopped”) is sent. So instead of: Refreshing the app every second or Repeatedly polling the server WhatsApp uses Persistent connections, Event-driven messaging and Lightweight status signals (not message data) This makes it extremely fast, Battery-efficient and also scalable to millions of users In short: no constant refresh just real-time events riding on an always-open connection.
