Neste dia, a 19 de maio de 1954, Catarina Eufémia foi assassinada numa manifestação de trabalhadores agrícolas que exigiam melhores condições laborais. O proprietário do local onde trabalhavam terá chamado a Guarda Nacional Republicana, que reprimiu violentamente o protesto, agredindo as manifestantes e acabou por matar Catarina Eufémia a tiro, que estava grávida aquando da sua morte.
Catarina Eufémia era uma ceifeira antifascista, militante do PCP (Partido Comunista Português), natural de Baleizão, no Alentejo, em Portugal, filha de uma família de trabalhadores rurais. Ela começou a trabalhar desde pequena, acabando por não chegar a ir à escola, e era também uma ávida militante contra o regime do Estado Novo, envolvendo-se na organização de trabalhadoras em defesa dos seus direitos, através da comissão local do PCP, e na distribuição de jornais clandestinos.
Após o seu assassinato, Catarina Eufémia tornou-se um símbolo da resistência antifascista contra o regime do Estado Novo, sendo homenageada por inúmeros artistas portugueses, como Sophia de Mello Breyner Anderson e Zeca Afonso.
