Those comparisons typically count UK pensions as wealth but ignore social security entitlements. Capitalize social security for an apples to apples comparison and Americans are much richer. UK median wealth is largely overpriced primary residences, which doesn't mean much for quality of life as you need housing to living. Look at income and it's downright bleak. The UK comes in next to the poorest US state, Mississippi, on median income. And of course mean wealth and income in the US is drastically higher.

@MartisimoII @rawespresso Duty free is soooo much cheaper leaving the country. Won't be bringing fags back, but maybe some drinks and always treats for work 😂

The salary you actually need to feel comfortable in the UK in 2026 has more than doubled in the last 15 years. In 2010, £35,000 was a solid graduate salary. You could rent decently, eat out, take a holiday, save a bit. In 2026, the equivalent number — same lifestyle, same level of comfort — is closer to £75,000. That's the difference between 'affording your life' and 'getting by.' £35K used to put you on the comfortable side of that line. £75K is now the entry point. Most people earning £45-£60K in 2026 are quietly running paycheck to paycheck, feeling vaguely confused about why a salary that sounds substantial doesn't actually go very far.

@ProlifeLowlife @elcrabbito @rawespresso The whole point is that £35k isn't a comfortable wage on average. Yes people can survive on it if they live in a cheaper area, but it's not a comfortable wage across the country.

@ViolaAppleton6 @elcrabbito @rawespresso A decent area is subjective and varies wildly in value across the country, but I take your point. I don't disagree with that summary. The issue is, it doesn't take account for spending habits on brands, tech, or keeping up appearances. What you've described should be affordable.

@elcrabbito @rawespresso Yes, so we don't fall into this group. We actually are.comfortable. bit dual income no kids. We had friends having kids.reducing hours, mat leave. It's not a big wage with a family.

@MartisimoII @rawespresso Well you clearly aren't because housing costs etc don't allow that on a £35k wage. So you may have a nice life because you live in a shit area, don't drive or other reason. But living comfortably is different....funny enough from poolside.

@DarkAnonymousUK @rawespresso It's only £3400 a month, if you're paying higher pension it's less than that. Most people's rent/mortgages would take about 1/3 of that.

@rawespresso This is utter bullshit, sorry. £60k is not paycheck to paycheck. Not even close, unless you’re diabolical with spending and living within your means. I pay myself £50k a year and live very well off it.

@rawespresso I earn just under 30G and I save, eat out and aim for 3 or 4 holidays abroad a year. If you're running paycheck to paycheck on 45-60G then you need to get educated and stop being a fucking mong!

@AnubisRaHorus @rawespresso That's £2700-£2800. Mortgage £1000, council tax £200, other bills £400, food £100 per week. That's £1700 before you even consider fuels, TV subscriptions etc.

@elcrabbito @rawespresso It'sad how people think everyone should just have the bare minimum . Our mortgage is £1000 a month car £260. So already down to just over £1000 for the month on £35k.

Told yesterday of a couple in their 80’s who went to their GP surgery to make an appointment to change her tablets as she has cancer. She was told she couldn’t have an appointment for several weeks. They sat in shock, then a woman who couldn’t speak much English came in to book and was given one the following day. The gentleman went to complain and was told they get paid £184 to give an appointment to the other lady. Shocking. 2-tier system.

A "friend" invited me to be a bridesmaid in her destination wedding. She "forgot" to pay me back for the $800 bachelorette Airbnb, the $300 dress, and $200 in hair/makeup. At the reception, she bragged about how the wedding was "under budget." For her wedding gift, I gave her a beautiful, heavy Tiffany box. Inside was no jewelry, just a printed, itemized invoice for $1,300 with a "PAID" stamp across it. I included a note: "Since the wedding was under budget, I figured you’d love to know your debt to me is officially settled! Consider this my gift. Congrats!" I finished my champagne and took the early shuttle back to the hotel.

@randeeeeznugs @Stacie243546 @lizzkelly7 If you can't afford to buy your bridesmaid a dress, don't get married. It's ridiculous to expect people to spend thousands on your wedding. You also shouldn't be expecting your bridesmaids to fund the full bachelorette.

@ViolaAppleton6 @Stacie243546 @lizzkelly7 Nah, you sound like you’ve never been in a wedding. Especially for someone you care for deeply! If you can’t afford a $200 bridesmaid dress and hair/makeup that is a CHOICE for the bridesmaid, and contribute to the Bach like every other attendee, don’t commit and don’t go. Simple

As a bridesmaid it is the responsibility of the bridesmaids to pay for the bachelorette party/getaway, their own dress, and if they choose to get their hair/makeup done. So honestly it was kinda crappy on your part to gift them nothing but an invoice of things that was your responsibility in the first place.

@Element_M1ller @JHTBFC Nah I disagree, even if you can afford it £10k on a week away with the lads is ridiculous. That's multiple family holidays. Priorities 🤷

@JHTBFC Certainly is if you either haven’t got that money in the first place or have to whack it on a credit card. But if you can afford it, like he claims he can, then you’d be all over it.

My old man was the tightest fucker on this planet. Had a fair few quid tucked away along with pensions etc for his retirement and then dropped down dead out of the blue and didn’t enjoy a penny of it. It went to me, but I’d give every penny to see him enjoy his own money like I told him to. You can still plan for the future whilst living for today and not sacking off trips away with your pals.

Tomorrow, a few of my mates go to Vegas for a week. I was invited, 7 nights, 6k for the hotel and flights. I said no, why? Not because I can't afford it. I earn more and have less debt than most of the lads going. It's because I'm not wealthy enough to do that. All in, with spends, it would be 10-15% of our post tax household income. I can't spend 10% of that on a 7 day trip, no matter how much I want to. I'm a father of 2 looking to leave a legacy for my boys. I can't justify 10k on a week away with the lads.
