Every movie should end with someone closing a book with the title of the movie and then explaining to the camera that it was all just a story — or was it? — and wishing you a good night

If I was a detective, I would not ruin my life obsessing over a particular case. I’d be normal and chill about everything

@AlongCameMolly9 Peasants sold/traded surplus in nearby market towns when they could. If it was a market day lots of other people would probably be coming in from the surrounding hinterlands also so his presence/absence wouldn’t be very notable

And Yes, there were investigations, constables and courts even waaay back. His absence from his work would be noted. Making him an easy suspect. Plus, a serial killer is killing more than once. You really think he can keep nabbing villagers and won't attract suspicion?

The first sentence is already absurd historically. Peasants didn't "go to market" in other villages or miles away, or at all. He has neither the time or the need or money. He's eating what he grows and living on his masters land.

@dissproportion Imagine John the serial killer peasant goes to market a few miles from his home village. On the way back he finds himself on a stretch of road with another traveler. His impulses take over, he attacks them and leaves the body in a field along the road.

“So when you’re ‘up’ for something, that means you’re willing to do that thing” “Oh okay, so when you’re ‘down’ for something that must mean you’re NOT willing to do that thing” “Well actually no”

@dissproportion I’m not even sure there would be an “investigation” such that someone would need an alibi. It would probably have to be a private affair. As far as I know no pre-modern states had special bodies dedicated to solving unsolved crimes

@dissproportion Sure, if he’s caught he’ll be hanged, but who’s going to catch him? The body will be found, but there will be no way of tying it to John from three towns over. Probably it will never even enter anyone’s mind.

I doubt there were many undiscovered serial killers for centuries before the 18/1900s for the following reasons: 1) death penalties handed out like candy 2) very little mobility 3) small communities where outsiders were noticed quickly; even in cities like London, you could tell what side of the street people lived on by their accent 4) people were very recognizable by their clothes even if they did leave town 5) people rarely lived alone or far from neighbors who would be witnesses, so potential victims would be difficult to isolate, and it would be easy to narrow down who didn’t have an alibi outside of major cities 6) mostly #1 applied liberally to anybody plausibly suspected of one murder
Arthur@Volga_Boating

I know this is a joke, but serial killers probably operated under the radar with impunity for centuries. The “era” of serial murder in the 60s-80s was a “sweet spot” where surveillance and forensics had advanced to the point they could be detected, but not yet easily caught
