I think part of the problem is a lot of people don’t know how fiercely we’ve had to fight to throw off the ottoman yoke. Greeks fell to the ottomans for 400 years and kept our identity while under Islamic law, suffering persecutions, forced conversions and the worst of all, janissaries. Our revolutionary leaders in 1821 drew on the heroes of antiquity as inspiration for their fight for freedom. We clawed back our land piece by piece, remnants of what was once the Byzantine empire. The Greeks that remained in Anatolia later suffered genocide and expulsion as recently as the 20th century. Cyprus was invaded only 51 years ago and has been illegally occupied since. The weight of what we once were, what was lost, what we were able to win back lays heavy on our shoulders. We won’t suffer outsiders trying to usurp what our ancestors paid for in blood.
