The so-called interest “cost” is nothing but a political choice, not an economic necessity. The UK government can wipe it down to zero anytime it wants by using Yield Curve Control (YCC), exactly the way Japan has done for decades. There is no market forcing these payments, no financial constraint, only a self-imposed illusion designed to justify austerity.
