I think an interesting offshoot here is looking at the chicken rather than the egg. The 3rd overall pick being equivalent to WR30 or Edge32 in terms of contract AAV speaks to how those two positions have become completely uncoupled from every other non-QB position when it comes to scaling with the cap. In 2012 when the wage scale was introduced, we also had another RB go at 3rd overall and his contract at the time (RB6) was equivalent to WR10 that year, not WR30. And for Edges, he would have been Edge 11. Since then those two positions just scale against each other for the right to be the "highest paid non-QB" every offseason. They don't scale with everything else, so it's gotten completely out of control.
