With the Wu-Tang Clan on their final tour, @RecordingAcad asked me to write a guide of their collective discography. I had a great time: spinning back great music, researching via books/docs, telling their story. Check it out: grammy.com/news/wu-tang-c…

@theblickrubin Saying "we" in my original tweet was very intentional btw. I've said dumb shit too — in my articles, on social media, IRL. But if words are my livelihood, as they are his, I gotta be mindful and accountable. He seems bright. Hopefully he'll learn from it like anyone else his age

@theblickrubin I can't be an OG for someone I've never met. But the job of an OG is to give advice — occasionally tough love — to a younger person based on experience. That's what I did with my tweet. If I knew him personally, that tweet would've been a text or a DM.

@theblickrubin More than half of the country hates Trump, there are nationwide (worldwide) protests with hundreds of thousands of people lashing out against him. And this criticism is years in. You think LaRussell is getting more critique than him over two days?

@theblickrubin I'm generalizing bc there are a lot of people criticizing him. Though everyone isn't the same — I'm not saying the "sold his soul to Jay-Z" or "defending horrible people" shit. But Trump gets lots more criticism, and much more often, than what LaRussell has gotten in 48 hrs

@DmehnizeXlo That's interesting phrasing. I think one of the most important parts of doing community work like he does is humility. And I don't believe that admitting to a mistake is "submissive." But I hear you, I get the point you're making

Everybody didn’t though, this controversy didn’t even start organically, there wasn’t some person who attended the concert who came out the woodwork saying he said something horrifying and everyone left. It started #onhere because he crossed the line of taboo for some and they’re loud about it. The conversation isn’t “what he said was wrong” the conversation is truthfully “we don’t like what he said” and that’s perfectly fine and reasonable but a far cry from the message of the for-profit memeification racket that is a product of online discourse about how he “sold his soul to Jay-Z” and is now “defending” child abusers and genocidal dictators.

LaRussell isn't the only one. But lots of people — rappers, writers, hosts, etc. — just need to be more accountable about how we're communicating. Words are your profession, so you gotta be aware of that. If *everybody* misunderstood you, you most likely just said it poorly

@DmehnizeXlo I don't think saying "I could've explained this better, my bad, this is what I meant" is coddling. But I hear you

Taking accountability is providing clarity when there is a question of motive, passed that point if the motivation is clear, the audience is not owed a coddling, and neither is he necessarily but there comes a point where the audience motivations are questionable and we SHOULD be questioning it.

@DmehnizeXlo The response I QTd was LaRusssell lashing out people for responding the way they did. That's blaming the audience instead of taking accountability IMO

He did recognize it, I just think he didn’t do it in a way that people feel is sufficiently humble and submissive enough to warrant them feeling like they have another mob-rule victory. He was asked to explain, did so and the response was “he’s gaslighting us”, “he doesn’t think he was wrong”…. Of course he’s not going to think he’s wrong about his own damn lyrics and why he wrote them. It’s a no-win scenario.

@theblickrubin Nobody's saying he "can't be an artist." He something stupid. It happens to everyone whether you're an artist or not. If he compared Hitler and Epstein to MLK and Malcolm X on his old albums and we didn't hear, so be it. People can only react to what they hear

@WEKetchum So y not just let him be an artist? Cause 33 albums in. It seems to only matter now bc he signed to Jay. Sad Reminds me of Americans waking up cause gas just went up. I can bomb my opinion all day until i have something people deem as #valuable then i gotta watch myself 🧢

@theblickrubin Once you're intentionally making a living on it, it's a profession. Doesn't that that's ALL that it is, but it's definitely part of it. No need to talk around that side. I don't have anything against LaRussell either way. I wish him the best, he seems like a decent guy.

@WEKetchum Art is “profession” now, that’s a huge problem So many think pieces abt an artists song. It was funny when it was just about abt ye rants Now y’all just wasting y’all time on this morale tirade.

Thing is, I can relate to his reaction. I take it very personally when my intentions/motivations are questioned, and I get tunnel vision when fighting against that. And that's in my one-on-one convos, so I know it's worse for him. But you just gotta do better
Haylow@Haylow

@WEKetchum I completely agree. In addition, it’s completely ok to say “what I meant to say was _____ and I missed the mark. I’ll do better next time.” We’ve all done it. It’s the quadrupling down that’s the issue at this point.

Here's why I feel nuts every time I'm on here: People respond to dimensional pieces of art on a two-dimensional platform, then use that platform to state their personal opinion as objective truth because it gets better engagement. It's like watching everyone lie all the time

It’s rare that a trend has 72 hr peak on here, but I’ve been seeing new Jack Harlow names and they have been just as good as hour one. Shout out to J.Crew the Damaja.
