If money is the only consideration, then yes this was a bad trade. But here’s the thing… historically about 40-50% of 1st round picks are busts. About 40% end up being a quality starter. And only about 10-15% end up being elite. So basically it’s a coin-flip of whether or not you’re going to get a good player or not. Players also don’t usually hit the ground running and make an immediate impact… that’s rare. It takes time to develop players… even talented ones. The Bengals don’t have the luxury of waiting around and developing a player that may or may not pan out. They need an immediate impact player. There’s no guarantee that D-Law is the same player he was in 2022, 2023, 2024, etc. But I’ll take the odds that he will be better in the short term that any player they could’ve drafted at 10.

To keep Dexter Lawrence for 4 years will cost the Bengals roughly $100 MM. The #10 Draft pick would have cost the Bengals $28 MM for 4 years. Would you rather have: Dexter Lawrence age 29-32 seasons OR The #10 draft pick PLUS an extra $72 Million to spend elsewhere Bad trade for the Bengals.
