@miscellanyblue When I lived in the Black Hills of SD in the late 70's early 80's the Posse Comitatus was active in opposing the American Indian Movement's organizing for justice on Pine Ridge and other Sioux reservations. The Posse was well armed and extremely racist.

After a series of deadly encounters, the movement collapsed, though Gale's concept of the sheriff as the nation's highest law enforcement authority lived on and the modern Constitutional Sheriff movement arose from the ashes. 6/
