In the running biz since 1980, back when Asics were Tigers and a 2 hour marathon wasn’t even a glimmer in our minds. We’ve seen every fad there is.

I used to LOVE March Madness… Took “sick days” every year on Thursday + Friday, posted at a bar with 4 screens all day. This year I don’t even care enough to fill out a bracket (but picking Michigan) Wtf happened… did I get older or did it just stop hitting the same?

A fun Gen-X trait is that anytime someone tells you about an event on a Sunday, your brain goes “Sunday Sunday Sunday! Be there! and you wonder if Grave Digger will be making an appearance.

@stevemagness One of the rare times I disagree. Schools should have their standards, and if you have extra to offer that’s a plus. But I know that’s not how the world works

Maybe a hot take: Universities should have lower academic standards for those excellent in a narrow field. The person who is genuinely great while running 80 miles per week, playing the violin, coding crazy stuff, or whatever all day should have a different standard.

@stevemagness That toothpaste is way out of the tube, and used to write “I’m rite and your wrong” on the mirror. Unfortunately, no going back now

Social media has pushed us to a kind of puritanism of everything. We only support, like, or learn from folks who are exactly aligned on everything. Any deviation is a signal to push someone to the out group. It's wild and sad. Let's bring back nuance

@stevemagness People also don’t want to accept that they aren’t as good as they think they are. There is a huge difference between the levels of runners. Doesn’t mean the slower people don’t deserve to enjoy running, but it’s not the same as the top tier.

In the past few days, I've had people get offended that I... -said a 2:46 marathon wasn't elite but a serious amateur. -called 9+ minute pace jogging. -recommended that people don't need to carry a water bottle on shorter runs. Social media makes us hyper reactive to everything.

@stevemagness I wish I had more space to truly express how frustrating it is listening to people make a big deal out of not very impressive results but I already spend too much time yelling at people to get off my line.

Most people don't understand running. It's why a non-runner will be more impressed by someone who jogged a 4 hour marathon than a kid who ran a 14 minute 5k In the sport, we obsess over what "fast" is, grading and judging ourselves Outside of it...no one has any freaking clue

Louie Hinchliffe turned pro with Asics after winning the NCAA 100m title in 2024. Now he is back in the NCAA with two years of eligibility. Once the NCAA set the precedent with this in basketball, seemed inevitable this would eventually happen in track...
Joseph Duarte@Joseph_Duarte

EXCLUSIVE: Louie Hinchliffe, a bronze medalist for Great Britain at 2024 Olympics and NCAA sprint champion, has rejoined the University of Houston track and field program. He will once again be trained by 9-time Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis. 🔗 houstonchronicle.com/sports/college…

Specializing a kid early on is bad. Have them do different sports. For example: XC - fall Indoor track - winter Outdoor track - spring

Every school should have a mandatory class called "life," which teaches you how to: sew, change a tire/oil, do nutella tricks, do taxes, cooking, etc. Basic skills that you need in real life.

@stevemagness Something so many people don’t realize. I’ve been on both sides, having felt devalued and as a coach, realizing that making sure every kid on the team is recognized makes them feel part of something no matter how good they are

If you don't feel valued, it's hard to be valuable. When everything around you signals that no one cares.. your brain gets the message. Why pour energy into something that doesn't seem to matter? Motivation follows meaning.

@Predamame While I know you’re joking (I felt the need to clarify), it would be easier on the mind if marathons put kilometer markers instead of mile markers.
