Across the Amboseli–Chyulu sub-landscape, interventions to protect both wildlife and community livelihoods are showing results. WWF-Kenya has completed its latest rollout of predator deterrent lights, installing 272 new units and bringing the cumulative total to 543 lights across the landscape, with support from the Michael Otto Foundation for Sustainability. The latest intervention now directly benefits 923 people, with 2,866 goats and sheep and 1,137 cattle protected from nighttime predation. The installations were prioritized in response to recent livestock depredation incidents reported over the past few months, which affected cattle, goats, and sheep in homesteads (bomas). The expanded deployment of predator deterrent lights is expected to reduce nighttime livestock predation, strengthen household-level livestock security, and support long-term human–wildlife coexistence across the landscape.

300 kilometers away from Amboseli National Park, in Nairobi, is where wildlife samples used to be sent for testing. This often caused delays in getting results. WWF-Kenya, with support from the Michael Otto Foundation for Sustainability, set up a veterinary laboratory at Amboseli National Park. Vets can now test and treat animals faster and stop diseases from spreading. This benefits elephants, lions, and other wildlife, and also helps nearby communities. Healthy animals create a safer environment for people and support tourism and local livelihood

Real change begins when people refuse to give up and choose to work together to restore what was lost and build hope for the future. In Kajiado County, Kenya, Jackson Saruni is part of a community that made this choice. Growing up near Entarara Forest, he saw both its beauty and its decline. As a child, the forest was full of tall trees, wildlife, and flowing streams. Over time, trees were cut down, land conflicts grew, and water sources began to dry up. In 2021, things started to change. The community came together with WWF Kenya and the County Government of Kajiado to form the Entarara Community Forest Association. They began restoring the 23-acre forest by controlling invasive species, training patrol scouts to protect it,growing indigenous trees and creating a Participatory Forest Management Plan to guide its care. Through their efforts, the forest is slowly coming back to life. Water is flowing again, wildlife is returning, and the forest is beginning to look like the one elders once described. Over 30,000 indigenous trees have been planted, helping to restore the entire ecosystem. This work has been supported by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment through the International Climate Initiative (IKI), under the Alliance for Restoration of Forest Ecosystems in Africa (AREECA).

The undisputed mbavu destroyer 🦁🔥 Lions are serious eaters. In one sitting, a lion can consume up to 40 kg of meat, about a quarter of its body weight. Their rough tongues are covered with tiny hook-like structures called papillae, which help scrape meat off the bones. Leaving no chance for leftovers.

Roots of Resilience :Nature is healing in Mkunumbi. Joint mangrove ecosystem monitoring by the Mkunumbi Community Forest Association, Kenya Forestry Research Institute(@KEFRIHQ ), and Kenya Forest Service (@KeForestService ) reveals a 90% survival rate in the ongoing restoration sites. An inspiring milestone that shows how collective action is helping ecosystems recover and thrive. This milestone is part of the Building Community Resilience through Nature-based Solutions project, implemented by WWF-Kenya and the @KenyaRedCross , supported by @wwf_uk and @BritishRedCross , and funded by the players of the People's Postcode Lottery.

Earth Hour 2026 reminded us that change occurs when we dedicate our time, energy, and commitment to the planet. Together with @WWF_Kenya, we transformed our intentions into actions by planting trees and restoring ecosystems in Ngong Forest. #NCBAChangeTheStory #CitizenshipMonday

🧵(2/2) Across Kenya, WWF-Kenya works with communities to bring water closer, and with it, opportunities: from restoring rivers and protecting springs to creating water access points that reduce conflict between people and wildlife, and supporting women through nature-based livelihoods. Because when water is accessible: Girls stay in school, women build businesses, communities grow stronger, and wildlife coexist safely. Water is not just a resource. It is a pathway to equality.

When water is scarce, opportunity is even more so. This World Water Day, the theme “Water and Gender” reminds us that access to water shapes equality, because “Where Water Flows, Equality Grows.” 🧵(1/2)

Forests are our water towers, our biodiversity reservoirs, and an essential pillar of Kenya’s green growth and climate resilience agenda. Globally, forests cover about 31 percent of the Earth’s land area and support over 80 percent of terrestrial biodiversity, highlighting their critical importance - PS Dr. Ng’eno #InternationalDayofForests #ForestandEconomies

Someone has to push the wheelbarrow up the trail. A member of the Green Connect Foundation wheels up the tree seedlings to the restoration site in Oloolua. Good job!!!
