This is exactly why I struggle to support Argentina. I'm Caribbean, so I know enough of the history. Argentina's treatment of Indigenous people is well documented, & the way much of its Afro-Argentine history has been erased from the national narrative isn't some random footnote. So when stuff like this happens, it doesn't feel like "just fans being fans." To me, it feels connected. As for Messi, I'm not calling him racist, but I'm also not going to pretend this doesn't affect how I look at him, the team, & the culture around it.
