My wife is the only one working full-time and the main source of income for our family. I’m not working—not because I’m blind, but because I recently became blind. I’m still rehabilitating myself, learning how to use a computer, and dealing with some of the usual delays that come with being a new immigrant in a new country. But guess what, guys? As a man, I still try to support my wife by doing housework, preparing the kids for school, and handling other things I’m still able to do. To help reduce the stress on her and bring in an extra source of income, as a sighted blind couple, we create inspiring family contents on YouTube and Facebook every day. Sometimes this can be very stressful for my wife. After coming home from a night shift, she often can’t rest. She still has to do chores, cook, get groceries, and then create content with me—just so we can pay the bills. If you’re an immigrant in Canada, you know how hard it is when one person is the main provider. I’ve seen many videos like this over the years, where someone helps another person escape poverty or meet a basic need, but none of them had ever made me cry. This one did. I felt my chest tighten when the boy broke down, and when tears rolled down his mother’s face, I couldn’t hold mine back either. I know what it means to grow up poor, to start hustling early and carry responsibilities far beyond your age. That reality stays with you. May this person, and everyone who goes out of their way to lift others up, whether a camera is present or not, never lack anything in their lives.
