Given how vague your posts are, and given the proliferation of popular "cover-up" narratives that directly implicate Erika Kirk and Charlie's closest friends in his murder, people reasonably assume you're referring to, and lending credence to, those narratives. That contributes to the ongoing torment of real, innocent people. If you're NOT referring to those mainstream "cover-up" narratives, then explain what you actually mean instead of repeatedly posting vague and ambiguous conspiracy slop that you undoubtedly know winks at some of the most sinister people spreading baseless accusations. Read the comments on your posts, Bret. People are extremely confused and concerned about what you're saying and doing. Many of them are among the most reasonable and measured people I know. Most of them once deeply admired and respected you. My DMs are full of people you know asking me some variation of, "What in the world is going on with Bret?" You're a public figure who communicates ideas for a living. Judging by the sheer volume of confusion and genuine concern about your state of mind in your comment section, I think you'd have to admit that you're failing catastrophically as a public communicator. That should bother you, a lot. It would certainly bother me, and I'd do everything I could to clear up the confusion and salvage my reputation. Instead, you seem almost completely unconcerned with providing clarity. In fact, you appear to interpret the negative criticism as evidence that you've triggered some kind of social immune response defending a sacred false belief. But that couldn't be further from the truth. We're not putting you through a struggle session for being a heretic. Nobody is asking you to shut up or repeat a slogan. Quite the opposite. We're asking you to say more, not less. We're asking you to state your ideas clearly, explicitly, and in as much detail as possible so they can be evaluated on their merits. Right now, nobody knows what the hell you're talking about. But you seem to be gesturing in a very dark and/or stupid direction. You're the only person who can actually clear up the confusion, if confusion isn't actually your goal. Take your role as a public figure seriously. Start behaving like a scientist instead of a quack podcaster with a martyr complex. Stop vague-posting conspiracy slop. Speak precisely. Say exactly what you mean. When you make claims—such as "there was a cover-up"—provide evidence for them. Don't evade questions or play dumb when people ask you for evidence or clarity. Don't treat pushback as evidence that you're right. Behave like a responsible truth-seeker and communicator who wields a flashlight instead of a fog machine. People are exhausted by the style of discourse coming out of right-wing Podcastistan of just dumping absolute garbage into the public square for clicks and views that we all have to spend time cleaning up. You're a smart guy. You're also very kind, and I've enjoyed your company every time we've met in person. If we didn't have a personal relationship, I wouldn't have bothered writing any of this. I would have simply dismissed you. I hold you to a higher standard because I still think there's a chance you're acting in good faith and have simply spent too much time online or in the company of people who have severely distorted your perception of reality. I genuinely believe you're better than the behavior you've been engaging in, and I hope you change course.

@Ed_Realist Reading and writing are verbal skills. The SAT has a verbal subtest. English classes are about verbal skills. I have no idea what universe you live in where these things aren't the case. And no, math is not spatial skill. Net of g, there's not even a subtest correlation.

It is an interesting point that schools have focused almost exclusively on verbal and mathematical skills when spatial skills are also important in the real world. What would an education system that prioritizes spatial ability even look like?

Many economists forget that the first-order problem of an aging society, one with high life expectancy and low fertility, is how to redistribute income from workers to retirees. How fast output grows is, surprisingly enough, the lesser question. If you have roughly as many retirees as workers, what each worker produces must be split in two, one part for the worker, one part for the retiree. At a basic level, it does not matter whether we do it through taxes, as in a pay-as-you-go social security system, or through capital income, as in a fully funded one. Workers will not be happy to see half of their income taken away, whatever the absolute level of that income. This redistribution will poison the political system and lead, with high probability, to dysfunctional policies. We are already seeing it across Europe in the fights over retirement benefits. And much of the American unhappiness about the profits of large corporations, largely owned by the old, is the same conflict, only in the fetishized form of equity ownership. Claims of the form “technological progress (e.g., advances in AI) will fix the problems brought by aging” miss the political economy of the situation. Aging is about politics, not TFP.

Interestingly, because of how the world really works, those active Wikipedia editors are most likely losers in their real life. It is simply unimaginable that any real-world expert would have time to spend on Wikipedia every day. Ai is already better than real experts on many fronts, of course it is much better than those fake experts.

In scholarly peer review, an author is trying to persuade other scholars that your work merits publication. Peer reviewers usually justify their decisions to a journal editor who is a known senior leader in the field and has the final say. On Wikipedia, you're trying to convince self-appointed guardians that your edits should be included in an article. They (and any final arbiters) usually have no apparent expertise on the topic, and everyone is almost always anonymous and unaccountable. As a scholar, it's much less frustrating to deal with a journal editor and 2-3 anonymous reviewers than activist Wikipedia editors with user names like Furry4Ever and NYCgurl572. Neither system is perfect, but scholarly standards of approving publication are much more credible than Wikipedia's.
