@bannon1975 (3) a hidden motive in it too. Reluctant readers could often be found just scanning around the wall reading these little snippets and then going to find the book in the school library. (That was a rule - the book had to be one available to everyone).

@bannon1975 (2) being hooked by that para, it would get a gold star sticker. Also, if anyone had free time, at school or home, or during wet play, they could draw/illustrate those moments in order to decorate the wall some more. We encouraged teachers and staff to join in, too. There was (3

We tell children that reading makes you smarter. We tell them it improves their vocabulary, their grades, their future. All of that is true. But there are other reasons to pick up a book. Nobody falls in love with something because of what it will do for their CV. We need to start looking at reading as adventure.

@bannon1975 I agree with this - there should be less snobbery about what counts as "PROPER" reading. E.g. it doesn't have to be a chapter a book. HOWEVER, we would be fools to think that volume = quality. The reading level of what is being read in this doom-scroll generation is appalling.

The debate about screen time and reading misses the point almost entirely. Children are reading more words per day than any generation before them. Texts. Captions. Subtitles. Comments. Gaming instructions. The question was never whether they could read. It was always whether we gave them something worth reading.

@bannon1975 I read slowly as a matter of choice. I read at around about narrator's pace, as if telling the story. Some people THINK reading faster shows a higher reading ability, but it doesn't. With all the audiobooks I listen to, increasing the speed above 1x just sounds rushed.

Did anyone ever tell you that you read too slowly as a child? That question lands differently for different people. Some remember a teacher. Some remember a parent. Some remember a reading group. Some remember nothing, because nobody noticed them at all. Both experiences leave a mark.

@bannon1975 I highly recommend John Boyne's "The Heart's Invisible Furies". And epic 700+ pages and an astonishing read. It's an amazing journey (23+ hours as an audiobook) and when it ended I really didn't want it to! lol

There's a strange few days after finishing a book. The characters are still alive in your head. The plot is settled but the world isn't quite closed. I always feel slightly lost. Like ending a long visit with very good company. It passes. Then the next book starts introducing itself. And somehow that helps.

@KateriSeraphina Agree to it. Send them the 30, but with an invoice for the expenses to cover your attendance. SO they will need to reimburse you for the travel and hotel room. And 100 per head and they still fell short. WTAF did you have at this wedding?

@bowtiedmeathead It was kind of the unwritten rule that you were ALWAYS more polite to your friends parents than your own. You would never dream of presuming it was okay to behave like that. Best friend or not, you're still the guest. Even if told to "help yourself" something tugged away at it.

Staying at my parents shore house with the family this weekend My sister is here with her kids… My nephew who is 12 yrs old brought his friend down with him He came down last summer too. Nice kid. They all play on same baseball travel team together Thought it was odd to see his friend go right into the frig to help himself to a soda and grab something to eat 🤯 Then to top it off…he walks around the house with just his underwear on lol Kid is way too comfortable. Told him you are welcome to eat and drink anything you want, just ask. He’s a good kid but seems to lack some basic manners… Anyone else find this is odd or is it just me? I told all 3 of my kids if they ever did that when being a guest at someone else’s house (especially non family) I’d kill em!

@lorahmoe It's simple. Children LEARN behaviour. When aggression is used to FORCE them to comply, that's all they know, so it is all they can use. Parents who command respect with calmness engender this in their children.

Do you guys ever notice the parents who are super chill but their kids still say “yes ma’am,” do their homework, and don’t act feral in public? 😭 Meanwhile the super strict parents are fighting for their lives every single day. What’s the psychology behind that?

@ThrillaRilla369 I don't think it should be paid in cash. If the 2 adults who made the child cannot behave like adults even when their relationship breaks down, they can't be trusted with money, either.

This will upset a lot of people but child support should be put on a card where both parents can track where the money is going and what the money is being spent on . I said what I said 🤷‍♂️

Kids running a lemonade stand on the sidewalk. American: “It probably tastes terrible, but I’ll pay 5x the price to keep the entrepreneurial spirit alive.” European: “This is completely unregulated. I’m not sure if I should report them to the tax office or the health inspector. Also, the price is totally unjustified.”

@Eman_8282 It's only chalk, easy to wash away. Given them a bucket of water and let them have some fun washing it off and then standing back to look at a job well done? You can then fairly tell the neighbour you won't stop them playing, but they will clean up after themselves. Simple.
