@waitbutwhy 90% of the discourse is people solving the problem under completely different sets of assumptions then arguing moral superiority.

This sums up why the blue/red button thing has caused such a ruckus. Like the white-gold/black-blue dress, it can be viewed through two different lenses, with each lens making one button seem obvious and the other seem unfathomable.
prerat@prerat

it was interesting that the comments for both of these were full of people saying "see everyone, this OBVIOUSLY clarifies the original problem!!!" not realizing the other poll with the opposite result existed too

What’s being left out is that the entire population wants to die after being subject to repeated cruel and deadly button experiments. If every person can be assigned the same probability of pressing red, what percentage should it be to maximize the relief of death?
Tim Urban@waitbutwhy

Everyone in the world has to take a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?

I always hate this problem because the answers change depending on assumptions. 1. Is everyone pressing the button mentally capable and can make the decision without error? 2. Does everyone want to live? Without those two details, you can’t treat it as an optimization problem.

@marissenmark Does anyone actually believe that any judge, now, or in the future is going to rule against private land owners? For all the posturing, no judge is ever going to make a ruling that effectively undoes the existence of the country. Why do so many grifters pretend they would?

Good to hear the BC Conservative critic say that he believes First Nations when they say that they are not interested in expropriating or taking anyone’s private property. Because it’s the truth. This hasn’t stopped the BC Conservative Party and most of their leadership candidates from conducting an all-out anti-First Nations fear campaign with the public, however. All of our leaders have a duty to the people of this province to deal with important issues like this with maturity, honesty and respect. It is extremely irresponsible to inflame the public against reconciliation for partisan political gain.

MLA @McInnis_4MLA says government is to blame for people feeling “scared” about Aboriginal land claims: “I believe the Cowichan … that they do not want to expropriate or take private property, but the government has done nothing to make sure that that’s actually protected.”

@NDP You talk about misuse of personal data, and then immediately use something that sounds like a petition, but isn't, to trick people into joining a mailing list sign-up. With the relevant details buried in in the small print.

@NDP It's great that the NDP is doing this, but I think it's ridiculous they're using it to build a mailing list. "When you submit your email address and/or personal information through ndp.ca on a form like this one, you consent to being added to our contact lists."

The price of everything is already too high. Corporations shouldn’t be spying on us to jack them up even more. The NDP is calling for a ban on surveillance pricing. Add your name now: ndp.ca/surveillance-p…

Caroline Elliott is basically saying that a couple of hours in Kelowna will sign up more BC Conservative members than the entire audience that @junonewscom can reach in a high-profile leadership debate moderated by the party’s architect @AaronGunn. Interesting flex 🤔
Caroline Elliott@NVanCaroline

There’s a lot of chatter about debate participation. A few things: 1. I’m excited to take part in any & all debates sanctioned by the Conservative Party of BC including the two that are currently scheduled for the end of April. 2. The Juno debate is unsanctioned. Its timing before the membership cut-off date is taking time away from growing the party through membership sign-ups. And it involves candidate(s) who may not even be on the final ballot (major payments are due after the debate date). 3. When we originally agreed to participate, it was due to a misleading communication by a Juno representative (sent on March 12) that *all* other candidates had been confirmed to participate. To be clear: a message was sent to me, directly, saying that “everyone else is confirmed.” This was untrue. 4. When it emerged that one main candidate had, in fact, *not* agreed to participate, we encouraged Juno to move the debate until after the membership cut-off so as not to be at a disadvantage (taking time to prepare for the debate while a competitor was signing up members). 5. The same Juno representative told us they would consider this. When they came back and said they wouldn’t reschedule, we declined to participate for all of the above reasons - but reiterated that I am (and remain!) happy to participate at a later date. For now, I’m going to keep doing what I’ve been doing. Meeting British Columbians all over this province. Hearing their concerns & taking their questions. Getting them excited about change & signing them up. Raising funds. Participating in the two scheduled, sanctioned debates. And - most of all - building a party and a movement that will defeat the NDP.

@marissenmark @Harrisonrj_ I expect I’ll end up agreeing with most of his moderate polices, and some of his more extreme ones, but I immediately cringed at all the aggressive rhetoric that meant most people I know will never him consider him as a choice.

@Harrisonrj_ Hey. I just watch them both on TV and on social media quite regularly. Both are very off-putting to anyone other than their core supporters.

@TransLink Up until a month or two ago, I almost always got reliable real-time data on the 33. Now it's 50/50 at best. Is there a reason?

@Wasgo Hi Cameron, unfortunately real-time data is not always available on the Next Bus website! You can always give us a call at 604-953-3333 to speak to an agent. They will try their very best to assist you, using the information and resources available to them. ^hb

@TransLink How come real-time data is so inconsistent lately? I was waiting for a “scheduled” stop and no bus came. With real-time ones, I don’t have to waste time like that.

@NewTSage Yet, Red Notice is the most watched Netflix movie of all time. Rock brings in those numbers regardless, streams or box office.

@jpooch21 Newsom is great at beating Republicans but he’s not a great leader. He’s been anti-worker, anti-homeless and anti-trans for too long already. If he’s the only electable option, sure. But he’s not great.

I feel like people are coming around on Newsom, because he’s one of the only elected Dems showing any sort of backbone and fight against the bullshit we’re living through right now. I get the left left isn’t a big fan of his, but I hope they appreciate this.

.@GavinNewsom: "I think he should start with Shreveport, Louisiana, and Speaker Johnson's district that has 6x+ the per capita murder rate of Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco. What about the carnage, Mr. President, in Shreveport? Why aren't you protecting the folks there? Eight of the top ten murder states in this country are red states. What bullshit."

@vig39 @GaryMarcus Weird. I don't know why. Here's a screenshot. I never post these unless I can replicate. Using a name has the replication rate for this one at about 33%. But if you do the question "B's in blueberry?" on GPT-5 non-thinking, you'll get about a 60-70% replication rate.
