Karren Brady’s promise of “a world-class team in a world-class stadium” rings even more hollow now. West Ham United should never have moved to a soulless public athletics track. Great move for the board but not for the fans. Leaving Upton Park made sense for commercial reasons but not sporting/atmosphere. Daniel Levy was right. The Olympic Stadium should have been knocked down and a proper football stadium built there. It is a good site. But the Olympic lobby and politicians got all protective and precious about the 2012 legacy. How often does this country need a huge athletics arena anyway? Yes, West Ham won a European trophy since they’ve left Upton Park. But London Stadium was always a problem, always a passion-killer, fans distant from the ones they love, the players, and limited potential for increased revenue streams. Other reasons behind club’s demise. Lack of leadership in the boardroom. Recruitment an issue, too. What a mess. Record losses, fears over future of Fernandes, Summerville and Nuno, intensified protests against chairman Sullivan.   Relegation likely. Two points adrift of safety following 3-1 defeat to Newcastle. Wretched goal difference (-22) compared to Spurs’ (-9). Spurs need only a point from Chelsea away (hard) or David Moyes’ Everton at home to guarantee survival and condemn West Ham. Can Moyes do West Ham a favour? The club who let him go. West Ham need to beat ex-Spur Joe Rodon and Leeds at home anyway. West Ham look doomed to the drop. They will return but need better ownership. And many of their fans have been warning of this perfect storm for some time. #WHUFC

@SportWizz @henrywinter They were certainly not ‘consolidated at the top end of the league’, his last season we won 2 from the last 19 games, relegation form.

@henrywinter David Moyes won WHU its first trophy in 40 odd years. Consolidated them at the top end of the premier league. Their fans wanted a manager to play football the WHU way. Now they are a championship team - can’t keep blaming the stadium. Introspection needed….

@jamthrawn A real thrill to meet you last night. Sorry for bombarding you with my stories — I was a few ciders in and couldn’t resist sharing my Rush/taxi journey tales! Hope I didn’t make too much of a fool of myself. Great night as always, and hopefully see you in LDN soon.

.... diving, feigning injury, appealing for corners or throw-ins that aren’t yours, is all cheating. Even time-wasting is a form of cheating. So much is good about football - competition, community, characters - but the cheating needs tackling. Column 2/2 open.substack.com/pub/henrywinte…

The outrage about Spygate is understandable. If proven, it’s cheating. It’s seeking to gain a sporting advantage over an opponent. Let’s hope this ire is also now focused on other varieties of cheating in football, namely the amount of deceit that can stain games... 1/2

A Labour leadership contest would be bad for the country, since every potential candidate would be bad for the country. There is no upside. For those not involved, it will be like watching flies fighting over a turd.

So ‘squatting Starmer’ is pushing through Digital ID in the King’s Speech. Yet another horrific policy that was NOT in Labour’s manifesto. He has no mandate for this. Reform will SCRAP Digital ID.

@talkSPORT The Moyes thing winds me up, his last 10 or so games we were getting battered 4,5,6-0 by everyone, we only survived relegation because the three teams below us were shite.

For once we can agree on something. Truly shocking decisions all round. Having now watched the incident repeatedly from multiple angles, I have come to the view that the goal itself probably should have been disallowed. However, West Ham should still have been awarded a penalty for the clear and blatant fouls by Arsenal players in the passage of play before the corner even reached the goalkeeper. The game should have been stopped at the first foul. On this occasion there were multiple incidents involving West Ham players, all appearing clear and obvious, yet VAR either failed to review them properly or chose to ignore them altogether. If the officials do not believe those are fouls, then supporters deserve a proper explanation as to why. This is now critical for the future credibility of VAR in football. A major decision was reached incorrectly because the earlier fouls were ignored. West Ham penalty all day long.
