Last year, a guy I know told me that the Chinese government had been caught red-handed executing political prisoners and selling their organs to desperate buyers all over the world. Last night, after she’d gone to bed, my 16 y/o daughter receives a text from a friend. (We keep electronics in our room at night). I know my daughter isn’t gonna see it for a while and I know the answer to the girl’s dance-class-related question. So I just pick up the phone and answer it really quick as if I’m my daughter and leave it at that. Tonight, I see her giggling over her phone. I ask what’s up. Apparently, the other girl’s mother had just wanted to get an answer to the question really quick, so she picked up HER daughter’s phone and texted mine as if she were her daughter. (basically both of us were too lazy to go through the rigmarole of explaining, “hi, this is Mrs. So-and-so, and here’s why I’m texting you on your friend’s phone…” But the funny part was how the two girls figured this out. Because the first one was so appalled at seeing her mother‘s perfectly punctuated and capitalized sentences, that she felt she needed to come clean that it was her mom lest my daughter think she is that conscientious. And my daughter, likewise, didn’t want her friend to think that SHE uses correct grammar when texting either. So what I learned today is that it is apparently humiliating to be caught correctly formulating sentences via text.

I had to quit reading ESV for similar reasons you listed, now I love the NASB95 but sometimes also read an older NIV alongside.

@RockWallBibles The ESV intentionally mistranslates in a bunch of places (Lev 17:11 is a great example, it reverses the meaning of the text there) so not the ESV. Seriously, compare it with basically any other translation. "Harder to read" is better than "changes the words of God" every time.

I don’t think people realize how many more words the NASB95 uses than the ESV. ESV contains ~757,000 words NASB95 contains ~807,000 words A good example of the difference in word count is the rendering of Romans 8:28: “And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 ESV (24 words) “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” Romans 8:28 NASB95 (27 words) This difference stems from the slight difference in translation philosophy between the two. The ESV asks: “what did the original author mean, and what’s the most natural, readable English way to say that?” While still staying very close to the text, just with a little more freedom to let English be English. The NASB ’95 asks: “what did the original Greek and Hebrew say, word for word?” and then tries to mirror that as literally as possible in English, even if the result sounds wooden at times. I am thankful that we have both (and other) good English translations. Which one do you prefer?
