They were being transported through the mountain like unconscious patients. Harris believed the first child might emerge dead. If that happened, he would still have to enter the cave again and repeat the procedure on the others. The first boy came out alive. Then another. Over three days, all twelve boys and their coach were carried out of the cave. The world remembers a miracle. The rescuers remember a decision almost nobody wanted to make: the children survived because the plan removed the one thing every heroic rescue story usually demands from its victims. Courage. The system worked because it did not require terrified children to be brave.
