@UKWX_ Where I work we’ve had a few large branches come down over last few weeks due to SBD (summer branch drop) as a result of the hot dry weather

I've already started noticing patches of yellowing leaves appearing on some trees. After an exceptionally dry July, that's not too surprising. As soils dry out, many trees come under increasing water stress and may begin shedding leaves early to reduce water loss, a sign of drought stress rather than the changing seasons.

The cold front today marks a distinct divide between cooler conditions in the north and warmer air further south, creating quite a temperature contrast ☁️🌡️

Met Office have verified the record June temperatures. The rigorous verification process has kicked out some site records, but has confirmed both max & min UK records were broken 38°C is almost two & a half degrees higher than the previous 1976 record metoffice.gov.uk/about-us/news-…

Much of England now officially in drought. Pretty remarkable when 6 months ago many of the same areas were underwater after an exceptionally wet winter. We haven’t got the ability to retain water or the infrastructure to treat it fast enough. We need to acquire it. Fast.

Temperatures reached 35.2°C today, marking the 7th day of 2026 where the UK has recorded 35°C or higher 👇 Prior to this year, the record was 5 days of ≥35°C, set in 1976 and 2020 🌡️

🟠⚠️ An Amber Heat-Health Alert has been issued across the East Midlands, East of England, London and South East, with a Yellow Heat-Health Alert in place across Yorkshire, the West Midlands and the South West. Alerts in place from 9am Wed 29 July until Thurs 30 July at 9am.

A brief hotter spell coming up next 2 days. Temperatures peaking in the more 'usual' hotspots, across E/SE. Tomorrow likely reaching 29-31°C and on Wednesday we may well see a large swathe of low-mid 30s. May reach 34-35°C in a few spots. Fresher again by Thursday.

In accordance with the very strong El Niño developing, global AAM is in a high state. It's also increasing while in GWO phase 7. This should encourage high pressure to establish across western & northern Europe around 7th August +- 2 days, before slowly focusing more toward NE.

The search for rain continues for the parched south of the UK, a few isolated showers possible later this week, but most staying dry through to next week. Both EC and GFS increase rain chances next week, more especially the latter, more low pressure on the scene next week, but differences on positioning make it difficult to say how much rain may be on offer next week. EPS mean has low pressure dominating further north than GEFS. Given the tendency for models to lower rainfall amounts this summer in the south as we get closer, not holding my breath that there’ll be much on offer next week. Focus of most rain, probably towards the northwest.

Temperatures are set to rise this week across some areas, bringing a return to hotter conditions 🥵 The heat looks to be fairly short-lived, however, with temperatures expected to fall again towards the end of the week 🌡️

Lots of smoke in the air here in Doncaster today 💨 Not sure if there’s a fire nearby or if it’s from the fires on Pennines 🔥 One thing for sure this wind won’t be helping! 🌬️🔥

A lot of wildfire smoke over France, some of it edging into the far SE England this morning.

Approximately 25,000 people evacuated as wildfire breaks out near Madrid, Spain. Local official tells BBC that the wildfire is "at its peak" and extinguishing it is "beyond the capacity" of fire-fighting crews.
