Most AMM protocols leave transaction ordering to chance. This has a measurable cost.
At yesterday's online Web3 Devs Underground event, @NChemaya from @bengurionu walked us through CLVR, a look-ahead transaction ordering algorithm that eliminates sandwich attacks as a mathematical property and brings price volatility close to the theoretical minimum.
Key technical takeaways:
- AMMs are order-sensitive by construction. The x·y=k invariant means earlier traders buy at better rates than later ones moving in the same direction. Ordering controls value extraction, and most protocols currently surrender that control implicitly.
- Sandwich attacks are an ordering problem, not a contract bug. Slippage tolerance is a partial fix; it still requires users to configure it and doesn't eliminate the attack surface.
- CLVR works by greedily selecting the pending transaction with the lowest price impact at each step. Empirically it reaches within 0.2% of the globally optimal order at low computation cost.
- At scale, it matters: 100 randomly ordered AMM transactions produce ~8% slippage failures. Apply CLVR and that drops to near zero.
- Implementation paths exist today: Uniswap v4-style hooks, validator ordering commitments, or dedicated chains like Unichain. Ordering rules should be protocol-specific, not chain-wide.
