The only KPI I care about: Number of apps in our ecosystem that have "1 chain" next to their name on @DefiLlama. I think it's paramount to foster an ecosystem that supports builders to such a degree that they go all-in on you/your eco. Solana is undisputed in this category

I’m watching Celo’s 1-year anniversary livestream as an Ethereum L2 right now and thought about compiling some thoughts as a user and a follower of the brand 👇
To me, Celo is all about being useful. Payments, stablecoins, mobile UX, real users, emerging markets, and now even agentic commerce.
That combo has always felt more durable to me than most of the narrative-chasing I see elsewhere so often.
That’s also why I actually like using Celo.
--> Stablecoin gas just makes sense.
--> Phone-number onboarding through MiniPay makes sense.
--> A wallet experience that feels closer to a payments app than a crypto science project makes sense.
And when a chain removes the little bits of friction that usually make normal users bounce, I tend to pay attention, and the thing is, the data is increasingly aligning with my thesis as well.
Celo’s anniversary report says:
- Layer 2 built for real-world use, with 700K+ daily active addresses — the most active across all L2s.
- 14M verified users via MiniPay, with 300K+ daily active addresses
- 75% of transactions are stablecoins; $6.2B in monthly volume ($2B+ flowing through MiniPay)
- Throughput up 300%+ since 2022; roughly half of all gas fees now paid in stablecoins
- Security costs down 99.8% ($6.5M → $20K annually)
- 3 hardforks shipped (4 if you include the L2 hardfork itself)
- 4,000 AI agents registering onchain via ERC-8004, leveraging stablecoin rails
Also, when the same rails built for people start getting inherited by AI agents too, that’s when it gets pretty powerful as a forward-thinking onboarding tool.
And the last couple of weeks only reinforced that feeling. Celo launched its Agent Visa program for AI builders, pitched around liquidity support, DeFi incentives, and access to MiniPay users; Opera also backed a proposal for a 160 million CELO allocation to deepen its role as a long-term ecosystem stakeholder.

1 year ago, Celo transitioned from L1 to an Ethereum L2
They have shown solid growth since inception, mainly driven by MiniPay - @opera's mobile-first wallet.
MiniPay now has 14M (!) users, verified via Self Connect. They make up roughly 50% of all active addresses on Celo.
