Recently, @CharlotteDOT opened a new section of the Uptown CycleLink adding to the miles-long bike lane connector. The project runs along College Street from Good Samaritan Way to MLK Boulevard, then continues down MLK Boulevard to Davidson Street. Cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers will see all the visual cues from the bollards to the green road paint. Take less than a minute to hear what it's like to use these lanes. 🚲

@JosephMargolis We've been appealing for infra for 20 years +. The more people we engage in cycling, the more powerful our voices. It's important that the messages we share encourage others to ride. We've all had frustrating moments. But sharing those never move the needle towards that goal.

@JosephMargolis I cycle that segment often. Like any interchange that includes an interstate, navigation can be more stressful. The edu. resources provide strategies to help identify the conflicts and mitigate them safely. What day and time of day was your video made?

@JosephMargolis Easy to feel your frustration but illegally passing stopped vehicles and then getting frustrated with those drivers? Misunderstanding state law? There are ways that your ride could be safer and more enjoyable. Check out LAB Smart Cycling or Cycling Savvy for helpful strategies.

@CLTdevelopment Write return to sender on them and put them back in the mailbox. That way, the person that sent them will know and probably appreciate you doing so.

As Executive Director of @transitfirstclt, I'm thrilled to announce that Charlotte’s only nonprofit solely focused on active & rapid transit is 1 of 10 selected for #SEED20 OnStage 2025! Can’t wait to amplify our mission & advocate for a city where transit is your FIRST option.

@barrygreenejr The most accessible solution is cyclist education. Ex. Watch this video for tips on riding if you choose to use a sidewalk and how to cross using a crosswalk safely which was the question in the OP. m.youtube.com/watch?v=j-mFhO…

@WeeklyRides Agreed, but this reinforces the need for driver's ed too. Many cyclists, especially commuters, don’t follow formal curricula—whether due to access, comfort, or habit. While we aim for universal understanding, infrastructure & driver education remain the most accessible solutions

What cyclists wear might help us feel better about being seen but the truth is it isn’t effective if drivers aren’t trained to see us! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO SAFELY CROSS HERE WHEN DESPITE HAVING WALK SIGNAL: A) DRIVERS HAVE A GREEN RIGHT B) DRIVERS HAVE A BLINKING YELLOW LEFT?

@barrygreenejr Every recognized safe cycling curriculum teaches lane control. A prominent lane position increases visibility of the cyclist, especially for drivers that have a permissive left signal.

@WeeklyRides Notice I said road and not the lane. I'm sure we're both aware there are levels to vehicular cycling & everyone isn't comfortable "taking the lane." Even taking the lane here still doesn't guarantee cars w/ flashing yellow arrow across from you will see you crossing straight.

@barrygreenejr A cyclist taking the lane would have no concern about right turning drivers. They would be in front or behind the cyclists. You don't control a lane from the far right. #stopfearmongering

Some would say cyclists should take the road here, unfortunately drivers at this right turn infamously look left for cars on 🚨 and roll forward before checking again for cyclists on right. A line never develops long enough for me to make eye contact with a driver.

@JHolmesLives I wonder if there's guidelines we can follow to answer the questions around bike lane distance, grading bike lane barriers etc.? Like the Dutch biking manual. If that's not applicable maybe another city with better bike infrastructure has these answers?

Council approved. The path will be 17ft wide within zoning boundary. Then 12ft, then 10ft in front of Clutch. The City may seek to widen the connection to 17’ in connection with the Uptown Cyclelink plan. (green) Finish by May '25.
