@Weez62 @RichardBentall @zatzi The EU literally has laws that copy the ECHR. To be a member of the EU you literally have to be a member of ECHR.
But sure, the EU can join the ECHR so its members can be members of the ECHR while being members of the ECHR and it can adopt ECHR law while having adopted ECHR law.

@Weez62 @RichardBentall @zatzi Look up the EU Fundamental Rights charter and note how it effectively copies the ECHR human rights. In fact the charter explicitly refers to the ECHR human rights in the interpretation of the scope and meaning of its Fundamental Rights.

1. @David90shaw - the Head of the Council of Europe simply stated if the UK decides to leave the Council of Europe, which it is free to do, it will join the 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 other European countries not in the CoE - Russia and Belarus. That's just a matter of 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭
and 2. no @zatzi the EU isn't a "signatory" to the ECHR because only 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 can sign up for it and the EU isn't a country, but 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲 in the EU 𝒊𝒔 "signatory" to it
