Reading at Wellesbourne 📚💚

Every class dedicates 15 minutes a day to reading for pleasure from a carefully-crafted reading spine. This allows children to explore new worlds, builds imagination and develop a lifelong long for books! Each week, a different class will share their class read.

Nursery recommend the story "The Gruffalo's Child" by Julia Donaldson. They loved reading about one of their favourite characters in a wintery woodland and have been brilliant at guessing the rhyming words as we read the story together 🐭❄️ @WellesbourneSch @WellesBooks

5LG practised performing the poem ‘The Sun Has Long Been Set’ by William Wordsworth in one of our reading lessons this week. We tried to put expression into our reading, thinking about pace, volume and accuracy. 📚❤️😁 @WellesBooks @WellesbourneSch

The children loved this activity with @LanguageBoxSLT. They enjoyed sharing our book of the week. Then used lots of language as they described the resources and made links to their own experiences. We were amazed by their use of positional language. @WellesbourneSch @WellesBooks

This afternoon in Science, we did an investigation to find out if woodlice prefer damp or dry places. 🔍

We don’t just read and answer questions in our reading lessons in Year 5. We explore texts in lots of different ways. Here, the children are playing the roles of a newsreader and a West Indian person who has just arrived in Britain on the ship ‘Empire Windrush’ #reading

Nursery children have been learning about Remembrance. We loved reading the story of Ava’s Poppy’ by Marcus Pfister and the children made beautiful observational paintings of poppies. @WellesbourneSch @WellesBooks

we took the opportunity while we had our fluffy friends in class to spend some time sharing some books from our book corner. Reading aloud to teddies is a great way to practise our skills 📚🧸

Nursery recommend the book ‘The Koala Who Could’. Some of us are getting ready to go to Reception after the summer, and the little Koala in this story has helped to give us the courage to go on our next adventure! @WellesBooks @WellesbourneSch

Nursery children found an enormous egg in our woodland. They used repetition and lots of different words to describe the size of the egg. @WellesbourneSch @WellesBooks

Today the children voted and the winning story was George and the Dragon. They listened very carefully to the story and answered lots of questions. When they went outside they got an enormous surprise! @WellesbourneSch @WellesBooks

Interactions happening during child initiated play today included lots of talk about colour mixing and some thoughtful descriptions of characters. Then they cleaned and tidied everything away independently. @WellesbourneSch @WellesBooks #communicationfriendlyspaces

The children have been having so much fun today using props to retell the story of The Three Little Pigs. They were thinking carefully about the sequence of events and they used lots of repeated refrains. @WellesbourneSch @WellesBooks
