I am not a Soccer /Futbol expert by any means but in my opinion the domination of Argentina by Spain yesterday was incredible. Argentina had zero shots in first 90 mins of game including stoppage time. Forget shots on goal, Messi's team got no shots off. I equate this to MLB team getting no hit by same team in two straight games. @FIFAWorldCup @TalkSoccer

THE HARDEST PLAYER TO EVALUATE THE SCOUTING CLASSROOM #55 "Sometimes the most difficult report is written on the most talented player in the ballpark." After 20 years as an MLB scout, I learned the easiest players to identify were often the hardest to evaluate. A player with obvious tools gets your attention immediately. The body works. The arm jumps. The bat speed is loud. The raw power shows up before the game even begins. But tools only tell you what a player can do. They don’t always tell you what he will become. That’s where scouting becomes difficult. LOUD TOOLS CAN CREATE LOUD BIAS The hardest player to evaluate is often the one who looks like a superstar before he consistently plays like one. It’s easy to fall in love with physical ability. • Size • Strength • Speed • Arm strength • Bat speed • Athleticism Those traits matter. They create upside. Players like Elly De La Cruz and Oneil Cruz possess extraordinary physical gifts. The challenge isn’t recognizing the tools—it’s projecting how consistently they’ll impact the game. A great body sells the dream. The game reveals the truth. THE PLAYER WITHOUT A LOUD TOOL The opposite player can be just as challenging. He may not win BP or possess one elite measurable tool. Yet he keeps outperforming everyone. Think Dustin Pedroia or Luis Arraez. They don't overwhelm scouts with raw tools, but they consistently won because of instincts, feel, adjustments, and baseball intelligence. Those players force scouts to dig deeper because they consistently outperform the grades. That’s where instincts, feel, toughness, and baseball IQ carry the report. DO THE TOOLS ACTUALLY PLAY? One question separates good scouts from great ones. Do the tools actually play? A hitter may have plus raw power but never reach it because he chases. A shortstop may own a plus arm but lack rhythm and accuracy. A pitcher may throw 97 but never command the baseball. Then there are players like Bobby Witt Jr., whose speed, power, arm strength, instincts, and competitiveness all translate when the game starts. The tool only matters if it consistently plays. That’s why we never evaluate tools in isolation. The report had to explain how they played. THE REPORT THAT KEEPS YOU AWAKE The hardest reports give conflicting answers. One series a player looks like a first-round pick. The next he disappears. Players like Javier Báez have always challenged evaluators because the talent is undeniable, yet the inconsistency forces scouts to weigh both upside and risk honestly. A scout can’t simply write what a player might become. He also has to explain what could prevent him from getting there. MAKEUP BECOMES THE SEPARATOR When tools and performance don’t match, I always came back to the person. • Does he work • Does he listen • Does he compete after failure • Does he truly want to improve Players like José Ramírez and Freddie Freeman remind us that makeup, preparation, and consistency often allow talent to reach its ceiling. Talent creates opportunity. Makeup often determines whether the player reaches it. CONVICTION REQUIRES HONESTY The hardest evaluations should never be forced into easy answers. Sometimes the best report includes uncertainty. That’s not weakness. That’s honesty. Great scouts don’t hide risk because they like the player or ignore upside because uncertainty exists. They gather more information. They get another look. They ask better questions. Because the hardest player to evaluate isn’t the one with the least ability. It’s the one with enough talent to make you believe—but enough questions to make you hesitate.
