Of the three Republican appointed justices in their seventies, there's so much focus on Alito and Thomas. Maybe people in the pressuring business should pressure John Roberts to retire instead.

@HonorAndDaring @ClassicalTheis @TradLibrarian The drugs and crime were in reference to Venezuela (and presumably the Maduro arrest), not immigration. I do grant the Axelrod meeting was probably a set-off factor But the whole gist of his post seems (to me) to have been about foreign policy, not immigration

@TradLibrarian @papaavalon He would have to manifest his intention to bind all Catholics. I would be skeptical of the use of an simple homily to do so. But nonetheless I didn't see anything in it to suggest an intention of binding or even defining

@WesleyHoratio @papaavalon Yes, I'm aware of the criteria. One could make the case for it falling under those categories, because of the way papal teachings are now delivered and how mealy-mouthed popes have become.

So the Pope's comments could be considered ex cathedra, then? 🤨 After all, he is speaking from the chair and exercising his ministry, according to the USCCB. These apparently are not "mere opinions," by their own admission.
U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops@USCCB

U.S. Bishops’ Chairman on Doctrine Issues Clarification on Just War Theory “When Pope Leo XIV speaks as supreme pastor of the universal Church, he is not merely offering opinions on theology, he is preaching the Gospel and exercising his ministry as the Vicar of Christ.”

@PiAlbertus The big problem with theaters is they need more new movies to be able to showcase. Unfortunately, since the Disney-Fox merger, the number of films produced has gone down significantly

@WesleyHoratio I worked in a theater when a Michael Moore movie came to it. Some people were very upset with the theater. No one local had a choice. A theater near me now tries to stay relevant by showing older films for cheap.

@HonorAndDaring @ClassicalTheis @TradLibrarian This would make sense if Trump responded by pointing out Leo's hypocrisy on deportations in laying wreaths for the 'Algerian Martyrs' or Kemal Ataturk (which he should have done) But Trump seemed single-mindedly concerned about the war with Iran

@ClassicalTheis @TradLibrarian I know you want it to be about the war because of the Israel tie-in, but it’s a fortuitous side issue that fell into the bishops’ lap. Immigration is the real area of disagreement.

@papaavalon @TradLibrarian That would just mean he's exercising his authentic magisterium, which isn't infallible An ex cathedra statement requires that 1) it must be definitive, 2) it must be on faith & morals, 3) he acts as shepherd and teacher of all Christians, and 4) he binds the whole church

@TradLibrarian If he is “preaching the Gospel and exercising his ministry as the Vicar of Christ” then I’d imagine all his statements on the subject so far are ex cathedra. If not then what even is an ex cathedra statement at this point if not that 😭

A better way to answer this is: “Pope Leo has been clear that every country has a right to determine who and when people enter it. He also reminds us to recognize migrants’ dignity. We must enforce the law while recognizing everyone’s humanity. The two are not in conflict.”

Border czar Tom Homan, to question on Trump feud with Pope Leo XIV: "I'm speaking for myself, a lifelong Catholic. I wish they'd stay out of immigration…If they understood the atrocities that happen on an open border, I think their opinion would change."

I remember my third-grade teacher mocked me for using the word "skirmish" (correctly) in class. She thought it was a made-up word and brought the teacher next door in to have a good laugh and made me say it again
memetic_sisyphus@memeticsisyphus

It’s true, every halfway intelligent right winger I know irl had a massive conflict with at least one elementary teacher over things like: reading ahead, reading too difficult books, not showing enough work, etc etc. it’s the first time we experience the uncaring tyranny of state bureaucracy and it sucks.

Don’t let the plantrusters gaslight you into thinking their current gripe with the Pope is over immigration. The point of contention between the Trump admin and the Holy See right now isn’t about immigration or “thirdworldism” or crime, but about the Israeli-backed war in Iran.
