this was actually my dissertation project. using a dual-sink heat pump setup. where you use a heat pump to move heat from a hot storage tank to a cold storage tank. now you have hot water, and cold sink (for refrigeration/AC) however, sad conclusion to that project was that this only ever makes economic sense in a very narrow set of climates where you have very high day/night temperature swings, which pretty much limits the usefulness to places like deserts where nobody lives anyway
