It’s not a fight, it’s a helter-skelter ride and you’re just a passenger. My affair with cancer started at 6 pm on a Friday night when the GP rang, they never ring, to tell me that my x-ray had revealed a shadow on my right lung which might be a lesion. She went home for the weekend. That was back in February 2012. I dealt with that promptly, privately and my upper right lung lobe was summarily excised. Job done. Never heard from the NHS again on the matter. A year later, one solitary, stray cell was discovered to have migrated into the cozy warm fluid of my skull where it had grown to a 25 mm sphere, floating aimlessly, if trying to kill your host can be called aimless. Using Star Wars technology that too was dealt with in a single stroke by amazing nuclear scientists at The Wellington. So far so good. Bloody incredible, actually. No chemo, no radiation well not in the normal sense. In 2020, the more existential problem arose. We discovered my own stem cells had turned against me and were now manufacturing too many of the wrong cells not enough of the right ones and what they were manufacturing were chimeras. Chronic myelomonocytic leukaemia, CMML as it’s called, is a rare leukaemia. You never want rare. Six years on from my diagnosis with a prognosis of 20 months survival rate, I shouldn’t complain, right? and I’m not. In those 14 years I’ve achieved a great deal, including two married sons and three grandchildren; the successful sale of my business; the development of Ichi-Coo Park and it’s firm place within the horticultural community of this, the country I love so much. So I’m used to challenges and though my CMML has been behaving itself remarkably well up till now, and many of you will know that I credit that success to the use of Turkey tail mushroom extract, suddenly it feels I’m being assailed from too many simultaneous directions. My blood cell counts have plummeted, which has sent my doctors into a bit of a panic. At the same time we discovered there’s something wrong with my heart and three investigations so far have turned up nothing, two more are scheduled. I’m also scheduled for a third bone marrow biopsy next week. Aside from my oncologist’s curiosity, I’m not actually sure why but I’ll pay the £3000 because I’m equally curious and I feel I owe it to him, oddly. Yesterday, I had a 45 minute telephone call from Honey, yeah, you read that right. Apparently, her dad was an ABBA fan. This followed something showing up in a bowel cancer test sample. They go to great lengths to reassure you that every issue they see is not always bowel cancer but, whatever they say, there is never a good reason for blood in your faeces. At the end of a lengthy, detailed and somewhat embarrassing conversation about my medical history and bowel movements, she declared that I was a complex case and for that a consultant would have to decide on one of three options: Go ahead with a colonoscopy under conscious sedation. Go for a colonoscopic CT instead, but that’s never as good. Fuck it, he’s gonna be dead soon anyway so why bother? Of course they didn’t consider the fourth option which is that Robin decides he’s gonna take himself off and get a colonoscopy done somewhere else that doesn’t think it has the right to make decisions over my life. So I’m currently juggling around six pending hospital appointments, in different hospitals, feeling like I need a secretary to organise all of this and I get a phone call from the cardiologist. They never call. My cardiologist has just read the radiographers report from my cardiology CT last week. Apparently my heart looks great - unfortunately there’s another shadow on my right lung. More letters more referrals. I’m not frightened I’m just frustrated, disheartened and fed up with the whole business. Why on earth call me to tell me that, just send me the letter. Now I’m waiting again. What all cancer passengers hate, like any passenger, is the waiting.
