The Birmingham Mail behind a paywall despite all those fucking ads. Makes it an even easier decision to block.

A new portrait of Chancellor Rachel Reeves has been unveiled. It shows her preparing to deliver her first budget in October 2024 as the first female chancellor of the exchequer in the over 900 years the role has existed. It is an oil painting by artist Sally Ward, and the Commons says she approached it "both a portrait and a history painting, showing an important moment in British political and parliamentary history". Reeves says she is "deeply honoured" that it will be acquired by the Parliamentary Art Collection, and that she hopes it "serves as a reminder to every young woman and girl across the country that there should be no ceiling on their ambition". It will be displayed in the Society of Women Artist’s summer exhibition in June, before its permanent hang in parliament's Portcullis House.

Sometimes when I’m out, I eat beans cold from the tin. It’s really cheap and fills me up, rather than the crap I end up buying (other than pie and mash). Beans with sausages from the tin have always been a luxury for me growing up, and I would always scran into them as a boy.

Somehow the UK is always the most exposed nation, I don't know how we do it. But no matter the crisis, we're always the most exposed and yet we seem to be the least of the beneficiaries in the "good times". What exactly is our secret sauce of this special curse of ours?

Middle East conflict will damage UK growth more than any other industrialised nation, OECD warns. It predicts UK economy will grow by just 0.7% this year, compared with December forecast of 1.2% for 2026. OECD said it had downgraded UK growth because it was likely to suffer higher inflation than previously expected - forecast to rise to 4% this year. Full report 👇 theguardian.com/business/2026/…

Jet set Starmer. Keir Starmer's 39 foreign trips have now cost British taxpayers £4.2m in less than two years in office. More than any other serving PM in history.

There is a big minority of people who just fundamentally hate young people and youth in general. It’s a good thing when young Brits are ambitious. It’s a good thing when young Brits try to mold the country they care about.

Wow, talk about fielding a wet behind the ears candidate. Reform UK's Kenzie Hollingsworth is a 3rd Year Law Student at University of South Wales. Seems his whole political career thus far has been helping @LlyrPowell lose. Reform UK really must have been short of candidates.

If a quarter of the defence budget is being spent on the UK’s nuclear deterrent and associated matters then it should be removed from that arrangement and operate within its own stand alone funding. Then we’ll get a better idea of why Britain gets a poor return for defence spend.
UK Defence Journal@UKDefJournal

The UK nuclear enterprise is expected to absorb between 20 and 25 percent of the Ministry of Defence budget in the coming years. Click image for more. ukdefencejournal.org.uk/nuclear-to-tak…

Apologies to @AntBreach --- I found his claim just now that Birmingham has no nationally-funded free museums so astonishing I had to fact-check (with AI). But he seems to be absolutely right. Big wow. I really didn't know. And as he says, makes Tristram Hunt's idea a non-starter.

Hang around your average garden centre on a week day and witness the consumer orgy of pensioners loading trolleys with premium price plants and garden furniture, over priced cakes at the deli, then hopping on here to have a go at young families daring to try to have a good time

@GriftReport The issue with the BBC commissioning this is that realistically if the BBC says to u well cover lunch you're gonna order more than u would if u were paying yourself
