Great first two days of #NACL Shoutout to all the players, staff, organizers, casters, fans, and talent that work on everything that goes into Tier 2 League.
After watching all the games, here are my thoughts on this week.
Positives:
-LOVE the new huds, I am so glad we finally get something official that provides the viewers and casters with better information. (finally we can see stacks!)
-LOVE the player cams, best decision ever. Gives the audience a face to the name and allows for players to show personality.
-BO3s <3
-Addition of stat graphs! Great to see damage delt after fights, econ differences, and runes.
-NACL moderators creating a much better line of communication between the org and their co-streamers than splits before.
-Load-in cinametics at the beginning of the game are a great addition to production quality.
-Great player and coach interviews.
Negatives:
-Player cameras are great, but not when I'm staring at hairlines and foreheads.
-A lot of production issues, Day 1 especially was riddled with them. A lot of freeze frames and pauses. The first game of the series, the client was in Spanish.
-When unpauses or breaks did end, a lot of game footage or draft footage was lost. Sometimes we would miss the first 3 bans of draft or even the first minute of the game.
-It felt like breaks between games were unneccesarily long at times.
-Observers missed some pretty important moments. A big one I noted was Day 1, Sion (Fiji) stopping and solo-killing Ryze, allowing his team to end the game. A split camera here would have been wonderful, but even just panning to that action would be nice.
-Replays have been all over the place. Sometimes they happen at inopportune times, but mostly replays cut out important footage OR are irrelevant plays given the point in the game.
-Caster production issues on Day 1 were a bit rough.
-First day being 3 series felt too long.
Suggestions:
-If it doesn't already exist, a communication pipeline between observers and player camera operators so that player cameras match players in a play. Great use of this was Shochi's quadra kill (shoutout shocheezi).
-Player camera checks before games start, so I am not looking at foreheads and hairlines only. Production can make sure players have the proper angle.
-Production having a clear check-list of how games will be portrayed start to finish. IE: full draft shown, load-in cinematic, etc.
While I may have written a full list of "negatives," I believe these problems can be easily fixed by the people involved. I also believe the positives from this week outweight the negatives. I'm overall very happy with how week 1 went and I'm excited to watch more games!
