Octopus, using the webbing between his arms to hunt the shrimp attracted to my video light during this night dive. During night dives, the diver's lights influence most observed animal behavior. More octopus footage and raving: youtube.com/watch?v=Gmoph8…

Latest polar bear paper exploring their role in providing carrion to other vertebrate species. Polar bears provide approximately 7,600,000 kg/year of carrion biomass for scavengers across their range. nsojournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/oi… [open access]

Massive bumphead parrotfish aggregation, with the fish defecating sand in near-synchrony. What a spectacle. Tubbataha, Palawan. This is a video frame grab, I have so much to edit.

Rising temperatures in the Red Sea are placing new stress on marine ecosystems. A KAUST study led by Dr. Matthew Tietbohl (@WhyOceansMATTer) with Prof. @MaggieDJohnson links an August 2023 marine heatwave to a mass fish mortality event along the Saudi coast, affecting at least 54 species. The findings highlight the importance of long-term monitoring and collaborative action to protect biodiversity as the region experiences more frequent heat extremes. 🔗 Learn more in KAUST Discovery: discovery.kaust.edu.sa/en/article/257… 🧾 Read the paper: doi.org/10.1016/j.scit… #KAUSTResearch #BESE #MarineScience #RedSea #ClimateResilience #MarineHeatwave #ScienceForImpact

discovery.kaust.edu.sa/en/article/257… Coverage of our recent paper documenting a mass-fish kill in Saudi Arabia. Likely one of the largest single events in the Red Sea, this event occurred immediately after a very intense, heatwave! Too much 🔥🥵🌡️🔥 = many dead fish ☠️🐠🐡🐟☠️

Very excited for Silvia’s PhD proposal talking about Agariciidae diversity and evolution in the Red Sea! Another great person from the @HabbLab! Some wild nestedness of different Genera! Silvia is showing a need for merging & resurrecting certain genera of Agariciids! #coral

Angelo Villagomez kicks off today's #IMCC7 by highlighting how the wealthier nations with overseas EEZ's (legacy of colonialism) tend to favour putting large marine protected areas (MPAs) in those overseas areas rather than in their "local" waters. 1/5
