Sophie Scholl was a German student and anti-Nazi political activist, a key member of the White Rose non-violent resistance group. Along with her brother Hans and friends, she distributed anti-Nazi leaflets; they were arrested by the Gestapo and, in February 1943, executed by guillotine for high treason. Sophie was 21 years old.

"I pray that my words give adequate expression to the souls of the martyrs." Poet and partisan Abraham Sutzkever was the sole Jewish witness at the Nuremberg Trials. He gave his testimony #OTD 26 February 1946; it lasted five hours. In his testimony he described the first days of the occupation of Vilna and the persecution of the Jews. Throughout his appearance at the trial, he refused to sit down, preferring to stand as if saying Kaddish for the victims. Learn more: bit.ly/4rCRA2p Pictured: Abraham and Frida Sutzkever. Vilna, 1944

#OTD 81 years ago, Auschwitz was liberated by Soviet troops. The Germans established the Auschwitz camp complex in the spring of 1940 in German-occupied Poland. About 1.1 million people were killed there, including about one million Jews. #HolocaustRemembranceDay

On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, as Holocaust denial and violent antisemitism surge globally, its lessons about why our choices matter have never been more urgent. Yet the abuse and exploitation of Holocaust memory have become alarmingly commonplace. It must stop. ushmm.org/information/pr…

More than 1.1 million people were murdered at Auschwitz-Birkenau—including nearly one million people simply for being Jewish. Their memories must never be exploited. encyclopedia.ushmm.org/content/en/art…

With great sadness, we received the news of the passing of Eva Schloss (née Geiringer), an Auschwitz survivor. Eva was born on 11 May 1929 into a Jewish family in Vienna. In 1938, her family fled to Belgium and later to the Netherlands. She lived in the same apartment building in Amsterdam as Anne Frank. The two girls, only a month apart in age, were sometimes playmates between the ages of 11 and 13. In 1942, both girls went into hiding in an attempt to evade the persecution and arrest of Jews in Amsterdam. In May 1944, Eva’s family was captured by the Germans after being betrayed by a double agent within the Dutch underground and deported to Auschwitz. Her father and brother did not survive. Eva and her mother were barely alive when they were liberated by Soviet troops. After the war, they returned to Amsterdam, where they reconnected with Otto Frank, whom Eva’s mother later married. Eva eventually settled in London, where she married Zvi Schloss. She authored several books and was a co-founder of the Anne Frank Trust in the United Kingdom. Eva Schloss passed away on 3 January 2026.

There’s a good reason the US and dozens of other countries and cities have adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism. When leaders move to revoke it, like what happened today in New York, it should alarm everyone—especially as violence against Jews is dangerously escalating.

3/3 Photo: During Hanukkah 1931, Rabbi Akiva Posner’s family set a menorah in the window—an outward sign of their faith. Through the glass, a swastika flag flew at a Nazi Party office. The family fled Nazi Germany in 1933 with the candleholder. Their descendants still light it.

On this day in 1945, both Great Britain & the U.S. celebrated Victory in Europe Day, rejoicing in the defeat of the Nazi war machine. On this #VEDay, let's pause to remember the brave men & women who came together to defeat one of the greatest threats to our way of life. #VEDay80

The Abbey bells are being fired eighty times following our #VEDay80 service. Firing sees all ten bells struck simultaneously, and is reserved for great celebrations, anniversaries and rejoicing.   This will be followed by a longer piece of ringing composed specially for the occasion, called 1945 Stedman Caters.  #VEDay #Victory80
