@ZugIslander You could rent a house like that in the same area for what the property tax would be alone.

@WillBeStonks @mikeeduggan Every single lot in the city was already contaminated for generations. Duggan did more to decontaminate them than anyone else ever could have. A single contractor and a single vendor merely recirculated already contaminated Detroit dirt to other contaminated Detroit lots.

@mikeeduggan Bullshit You turned Detroit into a toxic cesspool, that is going to cost millions of dollars, or more to repair. The citizens of Detroit are worse off after your tenure as mayor. You have no credibility to govern this great State.

Detroit went from deficit to surplus. Population decline to population growth. Uncertainty to stability to success. How did we do it? By setting aside toxic "us vs. them" politics and actually focusing on fixing the problems facing our city. I did it for Detroit. Now, I'm running as an Independent to do the same for Michigan.

Year-round Daylight Saving Time is not some new idea. America already tried it in 1974. It was an unmitigated disaster. It was sold as an energy-saving emergency measure during the oil crisis. Congress put the nation on permanent DST starting January 6, 1974. But within weeks, the dark winter mornings produced exactly the kind of problems critics warned about: children going to school and waiting for buses in predawn darkness. Congress reversed course that same year and restored standard time for the winter beginning October 27, 1974. The contemporaneous coverage is striking. On January 24, 1974, the Miami Herald ran: “3 Children Killed, Four Are Injured on Dark Mornings.” On January 29, 1974, the Sentinel Star in Florida said the legislature was meeting in special session because of “seven children killed while walking to school in pre-dawn darkness.” The Congressional Record was already referring to children waiting at bus stops in the cold dark, and even citing headlines about children killed in the early morning while waiting for the bus. By February 14, 1974, one paper was calling it “Daylight Disaster Time.” Public opinion collapsed. What began with broad support quickly turned into a backlash once people actually experienced winter mornings under permanent DST. One later account, citing contemporaneous reporting, notes support fell from 79% to 42% in roughly three months. This is the lesson from 1974: People like brighter evenings in theory. They like dark winter mornings a lot less in real life. And when children have to walk to school in darkness, the politics change very fast.

Freddie Mercury and Queen were a better band, produced better music, and had better showmanship than the Beatles.

The other day, I bought a bunch of cat food cans. Each one was a different flavor. The cashier just scanned one, then pressed a button for quantity with no regard for inventory. I didn't say anything, but I'm sure that guy didn't get paid enough to care. What's Jimmy's excuse?

What other states property taxes compound like Michigans? •California •Oregon •Florida (homestead) •parts of New York Among them, Michigan actually allows the fastest annual growth (up to 5%), which is higher than the caps used in those other states. So you all can stop telling me Michigans property taxes is normal and just all other Midwest states. It’s the worst in the nation for how fast it can grow and is growing.

@bog_beef Nobody understands that all of this music is just R&B. Country is uptempo R&B with steel guitars, Rock and Roll is uptempo R&B with feedback electric guitars.

@uncledoomer The problem with avant garde jazz is it's a performance art, it doesn't really work to record it overtly and expect it to be good, but if you're sitting in the jazz club the musicians all sync up when the conversation lulls and it's transcendent and unforgettable.

the problem with "jazz sucks" is that people who say that are picking up, like, the hardest hard bop record and trying to vibe out. hard bop is for stuffy intellectuals to pretend theyre smart. what youre looking for is "cool jazz." listen to some bill evans and chet baker.

@PortoValhe @Heliotrophy Yes, cops will even pull you over and frisk you if you dare to walk from point A to point B instead of driving to a designated walking path in a barren desolate park.

In America, doctor say you need to walk more. But if you routinely walk more than 2 blocks, you become "that guy" and everyone in your town starts recognizing you and assuming you're a brokie with a DUI and probably also a sex pest. To avoid this fate, you have to get a dog. Which means on your long walks you will be holding a plastic bag full of shit half the time. The final option is a treadmill, at which point your mental enslavement to Netflix or cable news is completely consummated with no hope of emancipation

@neontaster I wanna hold your hand was extremely progressive for its time. Just because it's sappy doesn't mean it's not good. It took a couple of years for other bands to start making comparable tracks, at which point the Beatles had already moved on to psychedelic rock.

one thing i don’t get about breaking bad is why (from a watsonian view) walt buys the car wash to launder his money instead of being on the books with madrigal electromotive like mike—surely this multinational conglomerate has a legitimate position for a chemist in some industry?

@BradRTorgersen You're saying you believe opposite things about the Beatles, thus your opinion is nonsensical. Music and songs are the products. If the product is the best, then they are the best at making that product.

I own a lot of Jethro Tull. I own all of Led Zeppelin. I own a lot of Yes. But I only have a "best of" remaster for The Beatles' top-most hits. For a reason. In their moment, they were the greatest Boy Band hit machine anyone had ever seen. But they also suffered colossal audience capture as a result. And it cost them. By 1969 the stress of grinding out catchy Top 40 had doomed the project. They were neither the best musicians, nor the best song-writers. Merely, the best "product" for a radio era which demanded it of them.
Edmund@Kulambq

I've always had this subtle intuition about The Beatles that Piero Scaruffi here articulates.

@gvtcontractor I had a friend use AI to try to do a legal malpractice case. The AI told him he could still sue even after doing the arbitration. I told him to double check that but he tried anyway. The other lawyer just told the judge it was a bunch of AI bullshit and had it dismissed.

They laugh but do they realize that people are actually replacing them? I’ve replaced my $500 per hour government contracting lawyer. She still needs to sign off on some action items but she went from billing us 10-15 hours a month to 1-2. I stopped using my real estate lawyer when a situation came up where I was owner financing a house and the tenant/buyer stopped paying the taxes and insurance on the property. I was able to get the judge to lift the motion to stay and then provide the 14 day written notice to cure with Claude. Do lawyers need to be reminded that this is as bad as the technology will ever be? My feed has many stories like this one and the one posted below.
SMB Attorney@SMB_Attorney

My feed right now is nothing but non-lawyers telling people to DIY legal matters with AI. And actual lawyers laughing and saying, “Please do it.”
