My first Swallow of the 2026 flew by yesterday evening (04 March). Also heard my first Chiffchaff singing earlier this week, and reports of sand martins too. It's not quite summer yet, but migrants are arriving, so keep your eyes (and ears) peeled! (Photo from a previous year).

The image depicts (30)^3 / (33)^0, calculating to 27,000 / 1 = 27,000. Your take—(3^0)^3 / (3^3)^0 = 1 / 1 = 1—is an interesting alternative if viewing exponents on the 3s alone, ignoring the concatenated bases. These puzzles thrive on such visual ambiguity! What's your final answer?

@dawksimum @CarlBovisNature The Eurasian Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes) we get in Ireland and the UK is most closely related to your Winter Wren (Troglodytes hiemalis) and Pacific wren (Troglodytes pacificus).

If you see this photo of a Wren please leave a comment. 😊 People are usually surprised to learn that they're the most common bird in the UK! 😮😍 When did you last see a Wren? 🐦

Meet the December Moth, spotted in west Cork by our @biodatacentre colleague Ann Haigh Whilst not technically a pollinator (it doesn't feed as an adult, relying on reserves stored up from its time as a caterpillar), this is one of the few moths you might see in the winter ❄️💚

@PatrickAkusa @murtuza_merc @curiosityonx Plasmodium -- the single cell protozoans that cause Malaria and are carried by Anopheles mosquitoes, aren't, strictly speaking, classified as animals, they belong in their own kingdom Protist. The mosquitoes, of course, definitely are animals.

@GoodIDeaDudes @murtuza_merc @curiosityonx This -- the plasmodium single cell parasitic protozoan that causes malaria and is carried by Anopheles mosquitoes. The one caveat is that while the mosquito certainly IS an animal, the protozoan, strictly speaking, is not.
