Today in American History: 1775 The Shot Heard Round the World! This marks the beginning of the American Revolutionary War. British troops marched from Boston to seize colonial weapons and arrest Patriot leaders in Concord, Massachusetts. They first clashed with colonial minutemen on Lexington Green, where the first shots were fired (origin of the famous phrase from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s poem). The British then faced heavier resistance at Concord’s North Bridge and suffered heavy casualties during their retreat under fire from colonial militia. Casualties: British forces lost 273 (73 killed, 174 wounded); colonists lost 95 (49 killed).

The park honors the everyday people who lived through extraordinary times defending their ideals of liberty and self-determination. A nation was being born, and they lit the spark.
