Still remember the feeling the day after England lost to Germany on penalties at Euro 96 and the pain of losing to West Germany on penalties in 1990. Not to mention losing on penalties to Argentina in 1998. Penalties again against Portugal in 2006 and against Italy in the Euros final of 2021. A second final loss in three years to Spain in 2024. And then last night and the feeling this morning It’s tough to take. Just keeps on happening.

@cashmo1 Who cares what the bookmakers think. Argentina are a better team and have won multiple titles just in the last few years

Argentina are the reigning world champions, back to back World Cup finalists, and Copa America holders. In what universe is England a better team than Argentina? Argentina were favourites. The game itself was pretty even until England scored. But England's legs and energy levels were gone midway through the second half and Tuchel's subs exacerbated the situation by removing any pace or attacking threat from the team and allowing Argentina to dominate. Bravery would have been taking off Kane or even Bellingham, who both had a quiet game, and bringing on forwards or midfielders with pace and the ability to hold the ball to allow England to ease the pressure and see off the game. #ENGARG
Jamie Carragher@Carra23

Losing to Argentina is more damning on Tuchel than defeat v Croatia/Italy/Spain are on Southgate. Those three nations were better than England, Argentina were not. But they looked it after Tuchel’s change to a back five, we hired him to do the opposite. telegraph.co.uk/football/2026/…

@WingsScotland So many are genuinely raging about losing 2-1 to the best team in the world in the semi-final of the world cup. I mean c'mon guys, have a bit of perspective.

Point I was making yesterday, that England fans completely missed and got SO pissy about, is that seeding kills you. You get so many easy games that you get carried away and then just can’t switch it up when you finally meet a top 10 side.

Unlucky England, but well done on reaching the semi final after playing, Panama, Ghana, Croatia, Congo, Mexico and Norway after qualifying from a group with Albania, Serbia, Latvia and Andorra 👏

Hearing that the English FA have complained to FIFA after “having to play a good team this time when we normally play shite the Sweden, Denmark, Ukraine and Colombia to get to finals”.

There’s a bit of a re-writing of history going on: “England are always like this” Not really. 1990, 1996, 1998 - they lose on penalties to elite opposition & are genuinely unlucky. 2002, compete against maybe greatest international side ever. Lose 2-1. 2006: penalties. 2012: penalties. We’ve never seen anything like the last 30 minutes last night. Ever. Certainly not in my lifetime. 12% possession is up there with Iceland as a sporting humiliation.

@KarlreMarks I think 4th is very fair and something they should be proud of. They had some cracking performances (if a bit inconsistent.) Shame England struggle to celebrate doing so well!

Counterpoint 1: England have actually overachieved by getting to the semifinal. They don't have the quality of Spain, France and Argentina and getting this far was a good result.

@Baddiel Not sure. I'd say England coming 4th is a fair reflection of the team's performance in the tournament. And a bloody good achievement too, they should be proud of.

Yeah yeah. We do. If we actually placed trust in our many players who do have touch and possession and passing ability - Cole Palmer, James Wharton, Morgan Gibbs-White, Trent AA etc etc - then of course we do. But because of this myth - that we don’t - that we’re England and we can’t do that so our strength is…strength and physicality and stoicism and backs-to-the-wall bravery instead - it will never be any different.
Andy Lancaster@andyl_77

@Baddiel To do it against the team ranked number 1 in the world you need a team full of players who are outstanding on the ball. Not just Mainoo. England just don’t have the quality in depth to control games against the very best teams. That’s why we lost.

I don’t dislike Mahmood, she’s been a great Home Secretary but Chancellor is the one job where you really want someone with a background in economics. I think this is a big mistake if true. On top of that, what’s going to happen to Mahmood’s immigration reforms now?

@Nick_Metcalfe Such wierd takes all over X today, isn't there. Argentina are literally the current world champions and were the top ranked team by FIFA at the start of the tournament. It's honestly a great achievement by England to get to the semis and no shame to lose to 🇦🇷

I really hoped that England reaching the semis of the world cup would be such an amazing achievement that they might avoid the ritual of trying to find someone to blame and pillory for being beaten by a better team. But no, here we go again...

@CharlieVantFPL I completely agree. Usually England are a chore to watch whereas this team, while inconsistent, has delivered some cracking performances. I genuinely think even with different tactics Argentina would have won that match. They were just... better.

Real shame, and Tuchel definitely got that wrong, but the calls for him to be sacked or saying it’s a complete disgrace are just ludicrous. Comfortably the best England World Cup performance in my lifetime, a lot of the squad is still going to be there for then next one and I think English football is in a pretty good place.
