@WillMillerPhD I see your point. I could be wrong but think the "automatic ejection" rule came about a few decades ago when a tossed helmet inadvertently hit an umpire.
Things change. Wisdom was obviously upset with himself, but rules are rules.

@MikePilbean Whether it should or shouldn’t be, today it is automatic. And with a rookie ump, he should especially know it’s going to be by the book. When you don’t see the field much—and half the fan base collectively moans when they see your name penciled in—maybe save the theatrics.
