Priority given to non-ivy schools and students from diverse backgrounds.
There are so many incredible resources put together by RAs, grad students, and organizations like @psychinout and @NextGenPsych that got me through the nerve wracking but rewarding post-bacc job search this time last year. I compiled a list of these resources along with some resume + cover letter + interview tips drawn from my CareerLab days. docs.google.com/document/d/1Ai…
@clhubes I’d say around 3 and 5 years old. My girls are bffs but there was quite a lot of jealousy and fighting when they were littler. They have always loved each other dearly but my oldest did not love it when baby sis started crawling lol. They’re 17/19 (20 next mo) now. ❤️😂
I'm not a big fan of productivity hacks, I think the best thing you can do it just sit down, focus, and work on your shit. But I've been doing something for a couple of years now that has been life changing for me as someone running a medium sized lab, here's a 🧵about it 1/
@raulpacheco I take breaks. If I can, I love to chat with someone else about the data and talk through some of my thoughts. But taking walks or disengaging by reading/watching something for fun helps too.
Qualitative researchers:
When you code, do you get up, stretch, get some coffee/water, go up and down stairs if possible?
I can't sit down and code through a bunch of interviews without some sort of physical activity.
@sebrina_doyle@OpenAcademics@AcademicChatter@gerryletendre I just use Microsoft Office. Code transcripts in Word using the comment function and organize codes in Excel. It’s nice for making pivot tables for frequency counts of codes/themes. Although I generally calculate Cohen’s Kappa in SPSS, but there are free calculators online.
@AdanBecerraPhD@ajordannafa@PhDemetri@camjpatrick I generally run the analyses with and without, reporting the results with outliers included, but noting they remained the same if removed. Although I recently had a dataset where one outlier was removed due to undue influence on kurtosis statistics (~28 with and <1 without).
One day, I will write an essay about female influencers and people-pleasing, and how having a large online presence forces many women to adhere more strongly to traditional gender role stereotypes and appearance ideals to avoid backlash in the form of harassment/doxxing/etc.
@Sakiera_Hudson I am not looking for specific skills since I am happy to train students to learn the skills they need, but I am looking for the following qualities: eager to learn, passionate about social justice, supportive, dependable, and able to work independently.
Question: What are people looking for in an RA before the RA joins your lab? What specific skill sets would you prefer an RA to already have before working with you? And be as specific as possible (e.g., not just "Qualtrics" but knowing how to use the loop and merge function).
@heymrsbond My university has a required semester long teaching course for incoming faculty. They also do a ton of helpful programs and trainings that are optional, but I find them helpful. My grad program (in psych) also did in-depth training and mentoring in teaching.
Graduate school admissions question: what recommendations do you have for students to obtain letters of recommendation when they graduated 3-5 years ago and haven’t stayed in touch with their professors? #AcademicTwitter@AcademicChatter
@mspezz@KSchaferPhD JASP has worked really well for myself and my students, and can do things that SPSS can’t (confirmatory factor analysis, different effect sizes, etc.). But I prefer SPSS for data cleaning and management.
