We get told we’re a small club and we need to realise “where we are in the food chain” but yet we constantly rattle the biggest fan bases in the country. They say they don’t care about us, but they love to give it when it suits them. Funny isn’t it, little old Newcastle.

All banter aside, I’m genuinely shocked at how many players have rejected Newcastle this summer. They’ve got: UCL football, A great manager proven at developing players, Less squad depth (so more chance of minutes), A big club + ambitious project. …and yet Cunha, Mbeumo, Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Delap, Sesko, Trafford, Guehi look like all misses. Newcastle clearly have the money to spend this summer, but no luck. Naturally, it’s always going to be hard to compete with the “big six”, even Man Utd, despite finishing 15th, still has that global pull (we owe SAF a lot for that). Man Utd name is just crazy big, and we are very lucky for still having that. But for a 18-23-year-old looking to develop, Newcastle is such a smart move, like Villa: European football, a top manager, a great environment for growth. Also given more time and not expected to be the finished product right away. I get why players choose the big six, but to be rejected by this many in one window is actually crazy. For further context: I’m not saying I don’t understand why Sesko, Cunha, or Mbeumo made the choices they did or even Delap and J. Pedro etc. My point isn’t about individual cases. Although development-wise, I actually think Newcastle would be a smarter move for many of the names mentioned. The point I am trying to make is the scale. How many rejections in one window. It’s becoming a trend. It's not like it's just one.
