@whippletom @wallaceme Or consider that blue car spends longer doing 50 than 70
English

@wallaceme Red car fastest.
Imagine it's 60 miles there, red car does it in two hours.
Blue car takes 1.2 hours on the way there, and 0.86 hours on the way back. So more than 2 hours.
To understand intuitively why it's asymmetric, imagine blue car does 1st leg at 0mph and 2nd at 120mph.
English

Help settle something for me:
Two cars are travelling from London to Cardiff and back using the same route at the same time. The red car does the entire journey at 60mph. The blue car does the first leg to Cardiff at 50mph then speeds up and completes the return leg at 70mph.
Which car arrives back in London first?

@adamjkucharski Surely you also need to differentiate between crust with no topping and the good bit?
English

@t0nyyates I thought it was a deliberate ploy to see if we were paying attention. It was obviously a typo.

@simonharris_mbd @conradhumphreys You can always tell the true patriots!

@DanNeidle @Jacob_Rees_Mogg Worth pointing out this only applies between 50 and 60k, but agree it makes no sense - much better to phase child benefit out from 50 to 100k, or if worried about tax take, do it from, say, 40-70k. And the cliff at 100k is really dumb.
English

Just discussing with @Jacob_Rees_Mogg on GB News the stupidity of having marginal income tax rates of 68% for people on average (for London) incomes. And higher than 100% in some cases.
Hoping the Chancellor fixes it tomorrow.

'The more children you have, the higher the rate. If you have six children, your marginal tax rate will be 91%.' Tax lawyer & commentator Dan Neidle explains new research that shows marginal tax rates exceed 100% in certain cases. 🖥 GB News on YouTube bit.ly/3vAYaw0

@SirJJKC And we needed a Supreme Court hearing to establish that?
English

@t0nyyates I would say that much of Labour’s support is anti-Tory sentiment, and so the polls represent people’s feeling on who to vote for to get Tories out. When it comes to an election, whichever party is best placed to beat Tories does well - including LD - see by-elections.
English

Just sayin:

@dave_chivers @jdportes One counterpoint worth considering - at least this allows people to think critically about stats without confirmation bias that often restricts such thinking. Maybe this sort of thing actually helps.
English

I know this is a filler piece in the Guardian but I think this sort of thing has consequences.
It is not "a bit of fun" if so many people misunderstand it.
Jacob Aron@jjaron
Some impressive statistical misunderstanding in this piece theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/d…
English

@kallmemeg @BristOliver @snj_1970 Well the report doesn’t explicitly say that is the case, but my rudimentary statistical knowledge suggests that is the most likely scenario!
English

@BristOliver @snj_1970 I still don’t get it. Does it mean he won one week, but all 6 tickets hit?
English

@allthecitizens @chrischirp Surely the real problem is that anybody thinks a twitter poll should have any influence at all in decision making? With or without bots, they are fundamentally flawed.
English

@adamjkucharski @matthewsyed Risk taking is invigorating. In life as in sport. So if you’re bored and unmotivated, it may be time to take more risk. Provided that you can also throw off the fear of failure, because more risk will lead to more failure on occasions.
English

@adamjkucharski @matthewsyed Sure, moving the game faster can turn draws into wins. But it can also turn draws into losses. So it’s only a positive when you play better than the other team. Test cricket is, imo, a very psychological game. Again imo, the biggest boost Stokes has brought is psychological
English

Great piece on risk taking in cricket and beyond by @matthewsyed
