development economics is theoretically the poorest subfield of econ. it's often nothing more than 'urghh human capital and institutions matter i guess?', which is a shame given the importance of its object of study

- Multiple hypothesis testing is dangerous and we should correct for it
- Heavy cars are *way* deadlier than light ones, and should (ideally) be taxed accordingly

It turns out that public transit is extremely important for reducing traffic. Because the relationship of traffic and congestion is extremely non-linear, a shutdown of transit can cause massive increases in congestion -- justifying substantial subsidies for trains and buses. 1/

What about measurement error?
KLPS has been following the same cohort since the late 1990s, and adult heights were collected twice — 10 years apart!
These measures are strongly correlated, but OLS may still be biased
IV yields point estimates as much as 86% (!) higher
