@FlorianOswald @overleaf There is a high entry cost to get into document editing with latex but: 1/typst is much easier to understand as a tool and as a programming language 2/it proves that the *next* document language (if any) will also have low entry cost so there is no long term opportunity cost

@FlorianOswald @overleaf Yes, absolutely. When you see how easy it is to rewrite in typst (with instant feedback) some features of a random obscure latex package, I would say it is easy to imagine letting latex go for good.

With @overleaf down, #econtwitter has time to appreciate that LaTeX was released 40 years ago. (It's 40 years old). Time for something new? typst.app

After some tries, I like typst, both the document writing experience (instant visualization!), and as a lean programming language specialized to control/extend the formatting. True, HTML/CSS could contend for the latter, but it isn't there yet (for papers)

@WinantPablo @msiniscalchi @vectornomist @mfariacastro @typstapp We already get that with HTML. typst seems like a frontend rather than an intermediate format with support for real publication toolchains. My hunch is that frontend solutions will be like quarto: use latex/tex as the intermediate and then a new IR will displace it...eventually

What is everyone doing for offline LaTeX these days? I mostly use Overleaf but need an offline installation for flights, etc. I've been using LaTeXTools with Sublime Text for a while but noticed it hasn't been updated in a few years

@jlperla @msiniscalchi @vectornomist @mfariacastro @typstapp Well, quarto is there to translate markdown into many other intermediary languages, like html, Tex quarto. And the pipe md->typst->pdf is much faster than md->latex->pdf even if not devoid of problems.

@WinantPablo @msiniscalchi @vectornomist @mfariacastro @typstapp I am not entirely sure what the goal of that feature in quarto is to be honest. Typst seems intended as an input rather than output format?

@msiniscalchi @vectornomist @mfariacastro @typstapp I just don't understand why they wouldn't base it on markdown syntax... Markdown isn't perfect, but it is where the world seems to be heading at this point.
