@WinterSelectlon Depends specifically on the subject matter (history, philosophy, religious studies, etc.) and where you live (there is more demand in the U.S. as it is seen as a niche, compared to Europe; ironically it’s easier to get doctoral funding for this research area in Europe).

Apparently there is still a demand for late antiquity scholars because only a small number of people do doctorates in these area of intellectual history. Academia got tempting again.
